I'm fairly active on several other forums/message boards/listservs and this is the first time I've ever seen such a clear majority of anonymous posters. I can see why some people want to stay anonymous so they can leave snarky/mean/generally unhelpful comments; but what about the rest of you ?
If the goal of such message boards is to build community, wouldn't it be easier to do so if people had usernames ? It seems confusing to me when posters are trying to refer back to other posters, but out of 10 posters participating in a discussion, 9 of them are anonymous. |
For those of us who participate frequently, it would get too messy too quickly. For example I'm always posting about my neighborhood/area where I live, when people are asking about places to live - I love it and always recommend it. Then sometimes I talk about my line of work in other posts. Then I talk about our daycare center or what my husband does. It doesn't take long to figure out who I am (to those who know me).
Then I have a post about how DH and I haven't been having sex for awhile or about how I'm looking for another job, I don't want my neighbors or co-workers to figure that out. I've also posted stuff about how much we make, our mortgage, what we are spending on a renovation, and I don't want to advertise that for people. It is assuming that everyone reads DCUM, but you never know. I am also on a neighborhood list-serv for moms and participate on another message board for moms in my county - and I'm also very careful about what I post since you can easily sort through and see who is posting what. I talk about work, our routine, etc., but would never talk about anything too personal like HHI, etc. |
I gave a username and password, but forgot them, and am too lazy to bother with it. So I just stay anonymous. |
MYOB! |
way better discussions with everyone anoymous |
DCUM is known for brutal honesty. People with screen names tend to be known, and eventually riduculed for their beliefs. Anonymous posting makes it work. How can all the Sidwell parents be honest if they think their BFF's can pinpoint them? |
I am on a couple of other forums that require screen names. People are nicer there, but I would post things here that I would not share there (not mean posts, but semi-personal information). |
If I had a screen name I'd worry my friends and acquaintances would be able to identify me. Then I wouldn't want to post for advice on issues my husband because I don't want them knowing about every single problem I have. |
"I am on a couple of other forums that require screen names. People are nicer there,"
And much more boring. |
Not really, though I'm sure many hesitate to divulge as many personal details. Then again, these are not forums specific to one geographic region, so recognizing people seems much less likely. |
i can do everything i want to do without a screen name, so I've never bothered to set up a screen name. I can read and i can post - that's all i need. I'm not a mean-girl poster, but I can see the advantages of people not knowing my identity, since some exchanges turn mean really unexpectedly.

Where else can you ask questions about income levels? |
Huh? Have you seen the "Moms Like Me" ones? Dull, dull, dull. |
You know, I was on DCUM pre-2007, back on the old server. In that period, many more people signed in and posted under regular user names. I still remember my name and a couple of the other regular poster names. (Unionchick are you still out there?). At any rate, I don't remember DCUM being much warmer, kinder, and cosier than it is now. In fact, I really don't remember much difference at all. People were brutally honest and straight out nasty back then too. |
A LOT of my friends and acquaintances read DCUM. I could not be frank if all of my posts were linked together under one username. Seriously -- preschool issues, neighborhood issues, job issues, my kids' embarrassing medical problems -- yay for anonymity. |
