We have been in our boring NOVA single family house since 2007. It's a very standard 1950s house in an older, close-in area. All the houses in the subdivision are one of four models, sitting on 1/2 acre lots. About a year ago, the original owners across the street sold the house.
The home sold quickly and the new buyers redid the kitchens and baths, put in new windows, new roof, new systems, etc. but kept the house's floor plan as-is, except for converting the attached garage into a bedroom. This was all done professionally by a well known design build firm in the DC area. The family moved in two months ago and their 17ish year old daughter took the new garage bedroom. It has a massive picture wndow (4'x 4') that she loves to completely undress in front of. Every. Day. We have both lost count of the number of times we have seen her in various states of undress. The room has blinds because they are closed when she is sleeping, but otherwise it is open to the world and literally directly across the street from our living room's large picture window. Anyone sitting in our living room gets a show whether they want it or not. Our living room is where we sit at night. Today, my spouse and I came home to a... certified-mailing-demand-letter of sorts, written by their attorney demanding that we stop looking at 'that window' or face 'criminal' charges. This was written by a lawyer, not a police officer. 'That' window is.... due east. Are we not to look out our living room window in an eastward fashion from this point on because their daughter is an exhibitionist? This is so..... nuts that I don't know if we are bound to reply or if we can ignore it as the insanity it is. So, can a person undress in front of an open window and demand the public not look that direction? |
No, they have absolutely no leg to stand on.
Either you ignore and go on doing what you're doing. Or you post on the neighborhood listserve and describe your experience, so everyone is aware there is a crazy family in the neighborhood (don't identify them). Or you get a lawyer to respond and cite the precedents where people were charged with indecent exposure (or whatever the legal term is) in their own homes because their windows showed them undressed. I don't know if there are any in your state, of course, but I know they have been a few cases. |
No. You are free to look where you wish from your own property or a public conveyance such as the street of sidewalk. |
OP here. Jeff is OK to confirm location. Not trolling in the least.
There is a dude in NOVA with a daughter that likes to undress in public and now they are trying to come after us, for.... something. I'm guessing he wants to sue us for seeing his daughter nude but she does this on purpose. I want to get ahead of his game before he turns psycho. I'm going to install a ring camera. Honestly I wonder if I should call the cops. |
Someone asked me to comment on this but I can't really comment either way. My standard advice is that if you think a poster is a troll, ignore the thread. But, wasn't there recently another thread about a neighbor undressing in front of a window? |
This is absolutely hysterical. Are you going to confront them? I absolutely would. Tell them to make their exhibitionist daughter close her shades. JFC. |
OP again- Jeff will know this. There are many threads about people undressing in view of the public but this one is mine. |
Jeff is the one you’re responding to. |
I've heard of first world problems, but this is like the level above that. Is there a name for this? |
Ok OP. Do you really think the police are going to come and criminally charge you for looking out your window?
You didn't just laugh and move on? |
Who cares? Just watch it or do not. Why is this such a big deal? Americans have such weird hangups. In Italy I could see my neighbours walk around nude in their apt all evening. No one cares. |
Tell your neighbor to go ahead with the criminal charges. |
Wait...is this just a weird way for you to pump your house? How much are you asking? |
Suddenly remembered "Rear Window" with Jimmy Stewart. ![]() No, you can look, use a telescope, record videos all you want from your own property to a neighbors. There is no expectations of privacy when they don't use blinds or curtains. What's next, you get summoned to court for your Ring doorbell camera or backup camera on your vehicle? |
I’d install cameras on your property and invest in a telescope so you can watch the stars outside of your windows Set up some chairs on the front porch or a bench in the front yard.
And definitely let the rest of the neighborhood know about the show so they can watch too. It’s hilarious to me that they obviously seem aware that their daughter is undressing for all to see yet they think you’re the problem. |
