Agree with PP. I wonder if USAA monitors social networks...I hope so, maybe they could provide some info for us. Been with USAA for 30+ years and never ever had a problem with them
I would also do a credit check - to make sure there isn't some other reason they are closing your account. Let us know!
Another USAA member (18 yrs) who hasn't received this letter. Really would like to hear what you find out.
I currently LOVE USAA.. I really hope that they aren't changing negatively as a company..
Current but soon to be ex USAA member - I don't think we've received the letter but we are leaving because they have jacked up the rates on our home owners insurance. They basically have valued our home 3X what they originally wanted to insure it for and the monthly rate now is astronomical. They told us everyone in VA got this bump but we haven't heard of it across the board. For the record - we have had them for years and not once filed a claim.
I've heard about this happening there are member reviews that suggest this on the USAA site. Have to admit, I've been to lazy to look over our policy. Have you found another company yet? Would love some suggestions. |
I'm not sure we've gotten the letter - but regarding premiums, ours was flat this year (we're in North Arlington); my sister lives in Reston and hers went up 25%.
We are looking into State Farm and a couple other places - just such a pain - but I am yanking ALL my policies from them.
I just checked our new homeowner's policy, and it went up $120 this year, from $479 to $699.
er, $599, sorry.
We didn't get the letter either (in VA). Regarding homeowners insurance-- if any of you are also Navy Federal Credit Union members, they also have a homeowners insurance program through a partnership with Travelers. When we bought our place, I called both USAA and Navy Federal for an insurance quote. Navy Fed was able to hook us up with a quote through Travelers that was half the price USAA was going to charge for the same amount of coverage. We still have our auto insurance through USAA though.

I'm also a 20+ year member, am in VA and have not gotten that letter. I love USAA. Have them for homeowners, car, life, umbrella, etc. Would never think of changing. Customer service is always helpful and while I have never had to file a claim with them, my parents have and they have always been fair and easy to deal with.
I would definitely call them. I know one of the reasons they can offer such strong coverage is because their insured population tends to be, or I have been told more responsible than the population as a whole. I would think all insurance companies check credit records. I really don't find it that strange. Love that they are a non-profit and you get those rebate checks. We are North Arlington and no change in the homeowner's policy. |
DC and no change to homeowners policy - no letter either. 15 + year member. Be very interested to hearing back once you talk to USAA. I love them, they have always been wonderful to us.

I have been a USAA member for about 15 years and have been very pleased using them for car insurance and banking. We opted to use Armed Forces Insurance (AFI) for our homeowners insurance after comparing to USAA - AFI had better rates for equal coverage and my parents had a long history with AFI so there was a familiarity, too.
We are in the process of doing life insurance with USAA and this is the first time I have been pissed off. They ask you some basic questions to give you an initial quote - one of the questions is whether you've had a parent die before the age of 60 - I informed that, yes, my father died of a heart attack. Once I completed a more extensive medical questionnaire and they conducted a physical, I got my official offer. It was some $20/month more than the initial quote. When I inquired about the huge difference, I was told that I actually had the best rate available for someone with my family history (early death of a parent). I could have NEVER qualified for the initial quote given based on that family history. I tried to contact the rep that gave me the initial quote, and they told me that they can't find him in the system. I don't know if he was fired/quit/ or they were just feeding me that line. But I was really pissed and DH and I felt like they did a "bait and switch" on us. Not sure the original rep who gave me the initial quote was either careless (in how he filled in my information to produce the quote), slimey, or what....but that's the first time I have received such a low quality of service. Just wanted to share that experience given some others are mentioning they've had some not-so-great experiences. I hope these are just some blips....and USAA remains what I've always known it to be - reliable, fair, cost-effective, etc. We haven't gotten the letter OP described (we are in VA, too). But it doesn't rub me the wrong way to know they use credit reports for said purposes. I thought it was pretty common knowledge that credit reports are used as a measure of risk for a variety of things - financial stuff, insurance, employment/clearance. |
I haven't gotten the letter (dc), but a few years ago (when I lived in VA), I remember something like this for my car insurance. Also, when the real estate market tanked, they capped my home equity line of credit to reflect the decreasing value of my home. I actually appreciate that they do things like that - it seems like responsible banking to me. (I've been a member since 1993.)
