Michelle Obama's Spain Trip --

Anonymous
This is partially facetious, but only partially.

Every issue nowadays is much more complex than it looks. For example, helping the economy of the Gulf Coast was just mentioned as an alternative to the Spain trip, but in this day of an interconnected world economy, perhaps giving a shot in the arm to the Spanish economy helps Europe where it is having problems, and thereby helps us as well.

Also, in terms of social issues, Obama is in a bit of a bind since he is on record as opposing gay marriage, and probably wants to tack a bit toward the gays with an election coming. Didn't Spain legalize gay marriage a few years ago?

And finally, with all this attention on Mickie O, Barry O has a chance to get some work done without all of us scrutinizing his every move. She's his multi-purpose helper!

According to CBS, the entourage has filled up to 60 rooms in a $300 to 6,000 dollar a night hotel (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/08/05/eveningnews/main6747469.shtml). That's a LOT of money being pumped into the Spanish economy, however you slice it.

$300 to $6,000 is a really big range. And there's a lot of waffling in the article you posted a link to: her Secret Service detail COULD be up to 70 people...." Uh huh, or, it could NOT be.

60 rooms filled is not exactly ambiguous. A huge chunk of change was dropped in the Spanish economy no matter how you slice it.

That earned everlasting love and admiration. Michelle Obama is free to vacation in Marbella, but it's not going to earn much admiration.

Where did you go on vacation this year?

AND from what I understand the hotel is less than 100 rooms. So, lets say they have to 30 that are at $250/$300 and the 20 at $500 and another 10 or so in the $1000-$6000 range. I assume that is a conservative estimate and I still think WTF?!?!

I'm not the PP, but I went to Florida. I pretty much only vacation in Florida. Never the Gulf side, though, but still I am a Florida girl. I go about 3x a year.

No one pays the posted rate when they rent 60 rooms. No one.

No one in the States. Is it common practice to comp rooms in Spain? I see them being like-sweet lets take the rich Americans for all they've got!

I went to FL as well. This was my 'summer vacation'. It was lovely. Have never been before, but as we sought a a great getaway beach destination my husband suggested we contributed to the Gulf Side economy. We got a fantastic deal and had a wonderful, family - friendly time. What was depressing was that (albeit it was 'off season') you could feel the ripple effect of the spill down to Florida's toe. There were NO people there, except for conventioneers who had been coming for 30 odd years and hadn't canceled. My husband spoke to a woman who said that people were walking away from firm commitment realty deals claiming 'act of nature'. The beaches were pristine and beautiful--but you know the old adage--perception is everything (especially in vacationing and realty). After we departed our hotel actually called us and offered us fire-basement rates to come back. That says a lot when a high end hotel calls you on your cell after check out to offer a deal of a lifetime.
I think Michelle Obama was on to something when she said Americans and their families should visit FL or other gulf states this summer if able. It is simply beyond my imagination why she couldn't have taken her 'major summer vacation" there and given FL a little 'boost'. I mean, my basic issue is, she headed to the beach. Just not the beach she told the rest of us to go to (and some of us did!).

You know what, you frequently hear about the Obamas spending weekends in Chicago, and vacationing here and there, it just seems like we are always hearing about their damn family vacations.. And we as tax payers are footing the bill for every damn vacation that they take while they're in office. And I know that Obama is entitled to some time off and blah blah blah, but I would feel much better about paying for him to take all of these trips if he were actually accomplishing something positive and worth talking about in the mean time which I am not seeing. This president angers me so very much, and I cannot wait to vote for ANYONE ELSE in 2012.

I do not know about Spain, but when we took a large group to London, Paris and Rome, rooms were comped and we received discout prices.

I think going down this line (comped rooms; what kind of 'deal' the Obama entourage got) entirely misses the point of people's criticism. This was a large-scale beach vacation on foreign shores a few weeks after M. O. encouraged Americans to spend their tourist dollars in FL. Why is she exempt from her advice to us? Can you explain that to me?

M. Obama's next stop is Florida. My family is going to Costa Rica, should we not go to this foreign country and opt for boring Pensacola.
