Does anyone have any insight for how they did acceptances and waitlists this year? The CHRVA bid regionals tournament acceptances and waitlist came out today and they make no sense toward the end of the lists and the waitlists compared to prior years.
Why is Columbia Vball on the waitlist for every age group when they looked to be right in there for AES national rankings and mtg chrva tournament reqmts for each of the age groups? Are they in trouble with CHRVA or in some administrative turnaround? Are they penalized for playing more AAU tournaments even though they also played CHRVA? Also the waitlists are pulling some much much lower nationally ranked teams in for some age groups that don’t make sense in any way you turn it. Did clubs who are part of chrva board or host chrva tournaments get a leg up? Did signing up for USAV Patriot Division give boost over rankings and results vs the standard USAV sign up reqmt for CHRVA bids? I did spot check some of the confirmed Patriot division list on USAV and that doesn’t seem to hold true for a theory. Some got in by playing all club lower level accept for one open chrva local when all the more competitive teams were away at bigger tournaments to stack the deck for wins but others are true head scratchers. Just genuinely trying to put some rhyme and reason to how it was done this year. The chrva handbook says they would use AES national rankings and tournament finishes for acceptance. The past 2 years it lined right up with the aes national. This year not so much and for some/most age groups. Teams that are hundreds if not 1000s lower in rank got accepted or are on waitlist over other teams that looked like they were higher in all stats and followed the requirements for 2 chrva/open, USAV registration etc. |
Can you explain how you figure these things out? I am new to the volleyball scene and I don't even know how to start. I know how to access the national and regional rankings, but that's pretty much it. Any links would be appreciated. |
It's pretty much all in advancedeventsystems (AES). Do a search under events for CHRVA and open the girls bid tournament. You can filter by division to see the status of all the teams that applied to play. They went from pending/dropped to Accepted/Not Accepted/Waitlist/Dropped. Dropped being the team withdrew. Look to see how many teams that age group was going to have (max teams) for the tournament. Most of the older age groups were all 12 teams max. Prior years, they used to go to 16 teams but this year dropped # of teams. Not sure because of court space or what since they are playing in the same venues as prior years pretty much.
You compare the list of teams that have applied and haven't dropped against the AES SportsEngine National ranking for CHRVA region teams as of this past week. There were some teams marked as Not Accepted that are higher ranked than those that got in or waitlisted. You have to click on the team from the rankings view to see their tournament line up. Check to see if they have USAV nationals as one of the tournaments they registered for. If they didn't, they didn't get accepted. Now it may be that some may have registered for USAV but they had to register for National or Patriot division. If they didn't, then they did not meet criteria and also were not accepted. You would only know this if you talk to the club director/team to see if they had registered for the higher division or not because you can't see the division teams registered for in USAV in AES. You also need to see if they played there minimum 2 CHRVA tournaments where one of them had to be in an open level division. National Harbor Showdown and Cap Classic count as CHRVA so you need to check there (sportwrench) to see if maybe their minimum tournaments was one of those 2. Volley by the James is not CHRVA, it was Old Dominion Region. Some teams may have signed up for CHRVA bid earlier in the season but didn't follow through because they just wanted to play the regional but never intended to go to Vegas for USAV nationals if they made it. Inquiring minds want to know why Columbia got waitlisted in almost every age division despite AES national rankings. Could just be something administrative or something else brewing. Only those in the club would most likely know. The 18s won regionals to get the National bid. Just don't know what happened for the younger teams. |
Thank you for all the details. I only looked up our age group out of curiosity. You are correct that some of the choices seemed quite random, even though a lot of them make sense. Apparently things other than the rating can play a role. I wonder if anyone can explain. |
I wondered specifically about Columbia 16. When I looked closer they didn’t do National Harbor or Capitol Hill. It seems they only did 2 CHRVA competitions, 1 is clearly open division and the other is mixed; I’m wondering if this is why they were waitlisted instead of accepted. Does Columbia have less teams now in the 15-17 age groups? I seem to remember they used to have 2 teams in each of these age groups. |
For the 15s, both Blue Ridge teams, Columbia 15 Red, and American 15-1 appear to be among the top 12 CHRVA teams based on the March 12th numerical rankings (USAV National, AES National, and AES Regional), but were not accepted to Bid Regionals. I think we have an explanation for BRVA based on previous posts. Columbia is waitlisted with two other teams. American is listed as "Not Accepted," even though they played Open at Capitol Hill and a CHRVA local (MDJRS). Certainly seems weird at first glance. |
No offence, but Open at Cap Hill and MD Jnrs isn’t really Open. |
Couldn't the same be said for any CHRVA event? When you get to see Open teams from all other regions, there aren't many CHRVA clubs that can consistently measure up. Without automatic bids given to the region, how many teams would make Nationals in a given year? |
Probably 3/4 in each age group Metro and Paramount in open VA Juniors, VAE and the occasional MD Juniors in one of the lower divisions That’s about it. The harsh reality is that Cap Hill is not an elite tournament, as the Triple Crown is same week, so very few of the top teams play there these days. Even Paramount didn’t play in many divisions this year at Cap Hill. True open is what you get at the qualifiers and some of the big national tournament, there’s a world of difference between ‘open’ at MD Juniors and open at the national qualifiers. |
I think someone shared that only the second teams from Paramount were at Cap Hill this year. The top teams were at Triple Crown.
Based on this week's (March 12th) USAV rankings, the twelve teams in the 15s age group for CHRVA Bid Regionals range from #24 to #1566 nationally. The AES rankings range from #22 to #1257 nationally. |
Please help me understand this issue (I am new to the world of club volleyball). Can anyone explain why this bid is important for a club? Our club was among those not accepted and I wonder how this decision will affect us going forward. |
I'm only in my second season with this ... and my kid's team did not earn a USAV bid last year. So, here's what I think I understand.
The only way to earn a berth to the USAV National Championship is either through your region or by earning a spot through a national qualifier event. Each of the ?40? USAV regions is allotted a few bids (2024 allocations PDF). Earning a bid through your region may be easier than earning one through the national qualifier events. So, making sure you meet your region's requirements for a chance to compete for its allotted bids is important. Bids for some levels of play (like Open) can only be earned at a national qualifier. USAV tracks the bids earned here: https://usavolleyball.org/compete/girls-indoor/2024-girls-and-18s-qualifier-results/ NOTE that AAU Nationals are simply a pay-and-you-are-in type of event. I think some teams who earn bids to USAV Nationals may still enter AAU Nationals as a tune-up. |
I don’t understand why Paramount 18s team didn’t participate in CHRVA regionals. I’m confident they could have secured a bid there. Even if it would not have been an open bid. I think they have one qualifier left to try to earn a bid, looking at other teams that will be there I just don’t think they will. So if I’m reading this correctly, they probably won’t be at nationals this year? To me, this was poor decision-making by the club, but maybe I’m missing something. |
18s are a weird year, as all players are likely to be seniors. You may notice that all qualifiers for 18s occur earlier than for other age groups. I can only guess is that any uncommitted players need to get in front of potential recruiters early. Note that USAV Nationals for 18s is in April and not July.
I'm not even sure that CHRVA has bid regionals for 18s (don't see it in AES, only 11s - 17s compete at bid regionals next weekend). Also, it looks like USAV only allocates Freedom division bids for that age group. |
I know the 18s year is shorter but top teams still try to go to 18s Nationals.
CHRVA did have bid regionals. Columbia won so they got a National bid. Mdjrs, Va elite and Renaissance DC also won bids at the CHRVA regional. So far only 5 teams from CHRVA region will be at 18s National championship; these 4 teams (that earned bids at CHRVA regionals) and Metro that earned an open bid at Ohio Valley qualifier. |
