St Albans vs Sidwell

Anonymous
There is no functional difference. They are both run by their DEI offices. They are both led by progressives. Your son will likely be labeled either an oppressor or the oppressed, and silenced if the former and martyred if the latter. Either way, he's becoming a beta-male. Just pick one and get him a good therapist to get his manhood back when they are done with him.

Very interested in this as I don’t usually hear a lot about St Albans. Truly would appreciate any info comparing these schools as we are applying for 9th

I have children at both. Given what I know about Sidwell, I would not choose it again. It’s extremely high stress with indifferent, sometimes incompetent, teachers some of which pride themselves on being tough teachers who do not give As. Your child could nearly kill themselves to get a B+. Laissez-faire approach that lets kids sink or swim. They’re supposed to advocate for themselves which is BS and ignores power teachers have over students. Strong science program. Intensely competitive anxious kids. Status conscious HOS that is into schmoozing it up with high status Democrats, could care less about unconnected families. CCO that is totally incompetent. Kids get admitted despite them. Quaker in name only. Overall grade: C+

STA is not perfect. No school is. If you are liberal / progressive be warned there are many MAGA / CCC families. The HOS runs scared of these families who constantly accuse him of being too woke. Teachers are more supportive. Some Sidwell types but they are fewer. More supportive environment between the boys. Exceptions in some grades but for the most part the brotherhood is real and protective. Helps the boys endure the high levels of stress. Strong English, history classes, weaker than Sidwell in science. Not an easy school for nonathletes because much of school life revolves around sports. Due props given to award-winning robotics team and model UN types. They can carve out a space of their own. Chapel and ethics are a serious part of STA life / curriculum. For some kids it goes in one ear and out the other because privileged entitled parents counter what’s taught at school. Overall grade: B+

We are very happy in our parochial catholic school and plan to be there through 8th grade. What are the benefits to applying in 7th vs. 9th? For those with kids at the school, would love to hear your experience at the middle school level and high school level.

Are you in 6th now? I hear that is a very tough class of parents. It can make a difference in your experience at a school like STA where parents are very hands on in parties and activities all the way through….

What? Sixth is a particularly nice group.

Agreed. Most friendly grade in the Lower school in my opinion.

Heard it is very insular among the Chevy crowd.

Really? Where did you “hear” that? 🙄

NP. Oh, please. Everyone knows about the nasty Chevy crowd at STA. Insecure mean girls still functioning like they’re in junior high. Almost all are proud SAHMs with nothing meaningful going on in their lives that derive their self-deluded status from home remodels, parties, clothes, and vacays. So fun watching them go at each other. A shallow moronic crowd that is a toxic element at STA.

It depends on the grade and thankfully ceases to be an issue by high school. We came in 9th and I couldn't even tell you who the CCC members are.

DP. Because you are not invited to their events and sadly neither is your kid. Your kid knows trust me.

I feel for the HOS. He is a good guy but I agree with you on the MAGA families and CCC. Many are one in the same. The governing board needs to support the HOS more and the governing board needs to add more families that are not at the two big country clubs to give a different perspective. Lots of successful wealthy parents at the school that are not part of that crowd that would be an asset to the governing board.

Sidwell parent here - I'm sad to say that the contents of PP's note are true. Would also not choose again (entered in HS).

Sidwell has females and St. Alban's doesn't...so huge difference in gender diversity right there.

Sidwell, for sure

Actually he's been invited to the CCC many times for pre-parties, ice skating, golf, dinner, etc.
Really, it does not matter that we're not members. And I really could give a crap whether we (parents) are invited to hang out with the CCC or any other country club crowd.
Our kid is in high school. We have our own friends. We're not trying to make new BFFs.

By high school the boys make their own friends. Many of the most popular boys are not members of any club. Some of the CCC boys are ones who struggle socially. It's no longer about who your mom invites over or who your parents are close friends with.

Oh, dear God. It’s the crazy STA mom who rattles off the things her son is invited to by the CCC. She doesn’t care of course but needs to let you know her son is in Da Club. She says she doesn’t know who the CCC members are despite her son hanging out with their children… frequently as she’ll have you know.

STA is not perfect. No school is. If you are liberal / progressive be warned there are many MAGA / CCC families. The HOS runs scared of these families who constantly accuse him of being too woke. Teachers are more supportive.

If you are a conservative be warned progressive families and administrators run the school. The HOS runs scared of these families who constantly accuse him of caving to wealth and privilege. Despite having hundreds of progressive schools send their kids to, whiny progressives demand to be admitted to a school where conservatives and CC members send their kids, then insult them and their way of life, and then demand a new governing board to rid the school of “MAGA / CCC”. Why did you send your kid there if you hate the people who built and fund the school? Progressives don’t stop until they ruin everything they touch even after the “good guy” HOS and his woke leadership team take their side on everything.

This is a very strange and dramatic rambling of a post.

History lesson - Maga and CCC did not build or find the school.

I don’t think anyone ruined anything. St. Albans is still a great school and doing well.

I would say get back to class but it is Sunday.

There are consequences for egregious behavior. Good life lesson.
