You are correct the the word “passion” is overdone but it’s not the parents who started it. College AOs have been using the term for at least 12 years. Listen to any of them speak. Parents who use that term (I don’t know any) are just copying what the schools say |
Or you do all that and still don’t get in — Another mom of kid with perfect stats and pointed ECs (passion) who didn’t get into any Ivies |
You don't need to spend all your free time pursuing your passion, lol. Could be an hour a week, few hours a month or less during the school year, maybe more during the Summer. You can call it passion, strong interest, whatever. Her passion was developed all on her own over a period of time. It was never her intention to apply for an Ivy until late Summer when she started receiving emails from the Ivy school which piqued her interest. I have no idea if she will continue this EC or not when she gets to college, maybe she will, maybe she won't, I don't know. I'm just describing how one student who got into an Ivy without a perfect GPA/Test scores, no hooks, etc. in hopes of inspiring others who could do the same. |
What is unhooked?
(Immigrant mom of a middle schooler here -- kid is taking advanced math and making a B, which will show up on his HS transcript. Trying to figure out if I've made a mistake letting him take the challenging course. I find the college admissions process deeply baffling.) |
Hooked: Athlete Legacy URM Rural area Low income Etc |
Some genders |
A gender isn’t a hook. |
TBH.. every IVY has defined their minimum grades and scores.. and a matrix of the two to reject.. |
My DD is in with a 3.7 but she is on the soccer team.
|
U r kidding. The bump for gender identities like non-binary is huge! People have collected statistics to show this is true. In fact, an education consultant offers the service of writing gender essays to get people into top schools. |
Congratulations to your DD!! It must be such a relief to know where you’re headed. What does she intend to study? |
Not in the NE where a lot of kids are LGBTQ. Gender can be a hook dependent on institutional need (like everything else). At a school w/ high female applicants, being male can be a hook (and vice versa). |
I’m the PP and I believe you when you say your DD had a passion. It is a rare kid that is moved to become dedicated to a cause or unique hobby at a young age. They do exist and it sounds like you have one. I am excited for her that she got in to her first choice. But the reality is that very few teenagers actually have a passion. They are being pushed to pick one and sell it. I admit- I have done this for my own kids. |
Jared Kushner got into Harvard with lower stats and no inclination for public service or advocacy etc etc |
+1 Female applicant in STEM is almost automatic admission, at many schools. |
