ED 2 Decision ….help would be appreciated

I am stymied by the Midd reject. Perhaps review essays? Did kid submit arts portfolios? Tufts seems like a lovely liberal arts atmosphere. Mine considered it, but I don't think they would have offered enough financial aid for us. If yours likes Tufts enough, maybe look over the writing, make sure you have good arts portfolio content and ask counselor to check the recs. Good luck!

UVM should work out I guess ?
UVM is nice and the honors college there is solid. Not sure I’d do an ED2 with this kid. Maybe Colgate? Definitely check Kenyon, St. Lawrence, and Whitman in RD.

There are so many sure things for a kid like this - Whitman, Puget sound, Kenyon, Whittier. Why not let it play out in RD so he has time to see them. Accepted students weekends are important. UVM, Colgate, Denison, reed, vassar, Elon, VT .. I have no idea but there’s a lot of schools out there. And he can keep his reaches. It’s not worth doing Bate’s ED when there are plenty of equally nice schools. Unless he loves bates.

It would be helpful to know why he hated Wesleyan in order to recommend appropriate schools.

What does your son want to study ?

Schools read the LOR now and if they arent rosy lovely they scold the teacher and don't submit that rec. Teacher recs don't actually mean THAT much unless it is the teacher is like this kid is the literal best in my career, or the teacher says the kid is a sociopath or lazy.

I think many on this board have a dated impression of Middlebury as a school a decent student can get into. All I can tell you is that from our HS in Naviance it is a sea of red x’s. The admits are rare and super strong students.

The ED acceptance rate at Middlebury is 42 percent, which is high for a selective school. It is near impossible to get into RD.

I would agree for RD, but not ED for those stats. Kids don't realize that so much of Midd fills in ED, so I'm guessing those xs are largely from RD.

How does that happen?

OP, sorry to hear that. Alas, I know kids with comparable stats who’ve been rejected ED1 @ Middlebury over last few years. GL to DC with next steps.

Not nearly impossible, its still 11% acceptance for RD.

OP should have gone TO with Midd, their 50th percentile is at 1466. 1470 might be a bit iffy.

Worst part about Midd is that they don't have any supplemental or Midd specific essay.

Consider Colgate for ED2

It is very unlikely that a kid who did not get into Middlebury ED would get into Tufts or Emory. Also, Tufts and Emory are similar to each other but neither is really like Midd.

Unless your kid is very enthused about Bates or Colby or Hamilton or one of the other similar colleges to Midd, then I’d have him apply to them RD and agree with including Kenyon and St Lawrence and maybe Dickinson which are much easier admits.

OP--what was the reason that you think your son was rejected ED1 at Middlebury?
Anonymous
What was the coursework? Is there AP English or comparable? Calculus ? AP/ IB level science and/ or social studies? Four years of foreign language?

If the coursework is strong, I would ED to Hamilton or Colby or Colgate. I think Vassar is a good ED choice also, but if he didn’t like Wesleyan, he might not like Vassar. Do not submit scores unless they are above 25%.

If you decide to wait until RD, I would consider Skidmore, Lewis & Clark and St Lawrence in NY.
