Are you going to choose a school based on who has the best volleyball games?

I understand how tall girls are preferable because it takes less effort to get it over the net and you can control where it goes better but they shouldn’t look at height in 12 year olds. A tall 12 year old might have already got her period so her growth is almost done at 5’4”. Another 12 year old is short but hasn’t really started puberty yet so she might end up tall.

I’m a parent of a short girl and don’t understand your reasoning. Yes, they may grow but significant growth of that kind is unlikely during one season. They tryout for clubs every year so of course they evaluate the girls where they are at any given point in time. There are clubs that value height over anything and my daughter doesn’t try out at them.

Are you only referring to picking a private school?

What clubs? (Parent of a girl who will not be tall.)

Virginia Elite. They will have 2 Ds that may be shorter.

DP. We aren’t going to Metro or Paramount tryouts either. My daughter is good but there will be so many at their tryouts. Lots will be really good and they won’t be looking at the 5’3 fully grown teen.

what position? a 5'3" fearless libero that is quick is a huge asset to any club.

What are you DD's aspirations in volleyball? If she is looking to play collegiately, playing on a stronger, more competitive team would be better, but that likely means higher costs, more time commitment, and non-guaranteed playing time. As others have noted, 5'3" might be not be limiting at all if she is a talented libero/defensive specialist.

Ok, I get it. That’s tough for the 12 year old who is done growing and her 12 year old friend grows 7” in two years. The 12 year old who stopped growing early will not make the next year while her friend would. You’re smart to find the right fit for your daughter and not the one that’s supposed to be the best.

MDJRs has a good reputation. Large club with many teams at every age group and a boys program. With so many teams, the style and quality of the individual coaches will vary, but overall I think it's a solid program. They usually qualify several teams for USAV nationals every year. Their 13s team actually just won 3rd place in the 13 National division which is a great finish. Also, they have a facility so they host a lot of tournaments.

That's a very good ranking. Maybe the first trophy in CHRVA history?

Thanks for the feedback. I don’t have a background in volleyball so this is all new. She is enjoying it now and wants to play as competitively as possible, for now. She’s not thinking about college at all yet and going to college for a sport isn’t my goal. She played both libero and setter on her u13 team last year.

Adding to my post, she wants to actually play. She would rather be on a regional team with playing time than a higher team and little to no playing time.

If she's setting and playing libero/DS, then height isn't as big of an issue than if she wanted to be a hitter. There is a preference for tall setters (and lefties too), especially at the collegiate level, but for club there are lots of shorter setters, even on some of the more competitive teams. If she doesn't know whether she wants to play in college, then working to make a Metro Travel or Paramount team probably isn't worth it yet.

What geographic area works for you? There are lots of clubs all over the DMV and a good place to start is figuring out what could work logistically. You can use this tool on the CHRVA website to at least narrow it down by state: https://www.chrvajuniors.org/juniors/contacts_clubs/clubs_search.cfm

Another thing to think about as you consider where to tryout next year is how much travel you are willing to do. There are lots of local clubs that aren't particularly competitive that still go to 3 or 4 tournaments or more a year requiring hotels, days off of school, and sometimes flights. If that seems like too much time/cost/commitment, then looking for teams that primarily play in regional tournaments is probably a better idea.

Great finish for sure, but no. Paramount 18s finished 2nd overall in freedom in 2022. Metro 16 T in 2021 finished 2nd in National and know they had a team or two finish top 3 in American or National back in late 2010s. Metro and Paramount have each had teams finish 5th in Open (just shy of the podium).

It's a great result for sure, but there have been other CHRVA teams that made the podium at USAV Nationals. A couple recent(ish) top finishes that come to mind are the VA Elite 18s came in 3rd in the 18 American division at 18s Nationals in Baltimore back in April and the Paramount 18s finished 2nd in the 18 Freedom Division in 2022. I'm confident there are more, but those are two that come to mind.

It looks like most of the GJNC schedule is out for Las Vegas. CHRVA teams in the Open divisions will have to put in some work!

VA Elite is known for recruiting playing tall players.

Metro 16, with almost all talented local players, is one of the two winless teams out of 36 open division teams in gjnc pool play(first 2 days). Chrva volleyball a long way to go.

But yet almost every one of those players will go D1. All star individuals vs teams that have been playing together for years.

It’s the coaching (or lack thereof) that’s the difference. That Metro team has arguably the most talent in the country of any 16’s team.

I'm still wrapping my brain around the usual top performers within CHRVA, but do Metro and Paramount have that much turnover year after year? In other words, haven't some of these local teams been together for awhile? (My casual observation is that parents and players from each club seem to know each other fairly well ... as if they've all known each other for more than a few years.)

In any event, it is a bit humbling to see how CHRVA teams are fairing thus far in Las Vegas:

16 Open - Metro is 0-5 (last in pool of 6)
16 National - Paramount is 2-3 (3rd in pool of 6)
16 American - MVSA is 0-6 (last in pool of 8)

17 Open - no CHRVA teams
17 National - Metro and VA Elite are both 3-2 in their respective pools (Metro is 4th out of 6 in pool, while VAE is 3rd out of 6 in pool)
17 American - Paramount 6-0 and will play another 6-0 team to complete pool play in the morning

I know there are other CHRVA teams in other divisions, but I haven't taken a look at those results. I did see that the Old Dominion region teams are winless in National (540 VB 16s and 17s are both 0-6) and have a combine one win in American (ECVC 16s and 17s ... where the 16s have the lone win, I think).
