Should I call IRS? No refund after 21 days

Anonymous
I am not sure if I should continue to wait or call them. It's over 21 days and the status still says "Return received." I am not sure if it's worth calling or if they have any updates for me. We have never had any issues in the past and I think that our return was very straightforward.

You’ll spend an hour on hold just for them to tell you your return is still being processed.

Go to the irs.gov website and review your tax transcripts. That will show you a more detailed analysis of where your tax return stands in the process. It will also show you any tax notices in process. You will need to setup a login/password and verify your identity. Easy to do. Better than calling in and much more information.

I am sure they do not promise to send a refund within 21 days. I think you haven't received your refund because your return is still being processed.

Why do you think it should be done in 21 days?

Because it says on the IRS website that if you filed electronically, you should receive your refund in 21 days.

OP here. I didn't know that one can do that. I will give this a try. I am really anxious about this... keep thinking that there is some major errors or we are getting audited or something.

That should is putting in work here.

Since you filed late, I would expect your refund to be late too.

We are still waiting for our 2021 refund. Thank goodness on the 2022 filing we owed them money--I am beginning to think we will never see this refund.

They made a mistake in the allocation of a 2019 estimated quarterly tax payment--allocated it to 2009 for some reason and said we owed the amount we paid through the quarterly estimate for our 2019 taxes. This is why they have held up our 2021 refund. One day, I'll get up the stamina to spend another eight hours on the phone with them

The phone delays are not nearly as bad as they were from 2020-2022.

Our VA state refund wasn't recieved until December last year. We filed on time. Ridiculous.

Kept calling and all they would share was in progress.

I had a good experience calling. They said they would call me back in 45 mins and did.

DP. Cool, but they didn't mention filing late. "Over" 21 days; we don't know when they filed.
