I work downtown and live in dupont circle. and while I appreciate the advice from all of the suburban moms, I've often wondered why this board isn't limited to parents who actually live in d.c. it's a different lifestyle. when I ask for recs on kids' salons or local vendors, I get a lot of MD/VA suggestions, which don't help me as a mom who largely relies on walking or public transportation. |
Amen, PP. I've said that before and have been endlessly dumped upon as a result, but I couldn't agree more. It doesn't help when you really need to find something and all anyone can tell you is to go to Target...if I only could! |
WOHM (work in DC) living in Bethesda.
To the PPs -- I sometimes find that many recommendations for my own questions seem tailored to NoVa, and are not useful to me. I get annoyed and feel like everyone here lives in McLean. And then, I realize, hey, that was really MY OWN FAULT -- I needed to specify that I was looking for recommendations that would suit someone living in the MD burbs. Same with recommendations on things like naps -- some recommendations seem geared toward a SAHM, but it's on me to explain e.g. that I'm usually not home to lie down with my child for naps. I don't think the solution is to kick everyone out who doesn't exactly replicate my life experience. |
Well, there IS a Target at a metro stop in DC now lol!!
Anyway, I think it would also be interesting to know economic status of the people giving advice here. While there are (obviously) a wide range of opinions, I still get the idea that the vast majority live a different life than me...a somewhat *wealthier* life. So I wonder how many people here make six figures? I bet even that is the low end of income levels for this messageboard. We live in PG County, very close in to DC. Very squarely middle-income level. We would be broke if we tried to live anywhere other than PG county! |
If anyone is interested in contributing their information again, I've put together a simple survey so that people can see a simple breakdown of DCUM's membership. I set it up through Survey Monkey, a free service, and I have set it so that the IP addresses of respondents are NOT collected/saved.

Sorry, I see that after you fill out the survey, you are not automatically directed to the results. It may be that only survey creator can see the results. I am looking for a way to make them accessible to everybody... |
Live in DC, work PT in Arlington. I think the board is pretty representative of both the burbs and DC. I wouldn't want it to be restricted b/c I don't mind running to the burbs for stuff that's worth it. |
I actually had to pay $20 to make the survey results visible to everyone, so I hope that people will take part! (Pretty stupid, I know, to think that I would actually get something for free.) The results should be available here:

BTW, if you complain gently about the survey wording, I can probably change it. I put it together very quickly and tried to be as neutral as possible. |
I am a doula and that is initially what brought me to DCUM and what keeps me the most interested in it. I know lots of other doulas/midwives/childbirth educators who also come to the forums. For the first question, maybe you could have an option called "birth professional". |
Live & work FT in DC. Have a nanny. |
