Our tried and true auto-train is already booked for our annual vacation to FL this year!! With 2 adults, 2 elementary-aged kids, 2 babies and 2 weeks worth of luggage, bikes, strollers, scooters, etc., flying is just not an option for us, so we have decided to get a little crazy and plan a leisurely and hopefully somewhat entertaining (at least for our two older kids!) road trip to Kissimmee and back.

We are DC natives who now live in Lewes, DE, so of course DC to visit friends will be a pitstop and/or overnight both ways, and I also hope to visit with my old college roommate and her kids in Jacksonville, FL, but both places are only a few hours outside of Lewes and Kissimmee respectively...we are desperately searching for some fun places to stop in between! Could be a ten minute stop at The World's Biggest Whatever, a thirty minute stop at a particularly enjoyable park/playground, a two hour stop at a children's museum, an overnight at a great hotel/motel with an indoor pool, etc. Would also love to know of anyone's favorite rest stops - either official rest stops or just a particular restaurant or gas station along the way that stands out for either cleanliness or efficiency (maybe a place with food, a bathroom AND a playground?). Any and all suggestions are soooooooooo appreciated.

We may do some sort of scavenger hunt/map game type thing for the benefit of our two older kids, who will be almost 7 and almost 8, and are extremely bummed that the auto-train is not an option this year, so if you have any suggestions to that end, I would love to hear what you did.

Thank you!

You don't say how old your children are, but you should check out the Francis Scott Key Resort http://www.fskfamily.com if they are elementary-aged and/or younger. Not a big and fancy water park, but a fave of the little ones here (we are transplants from DC who now live in Lewes, DE). They're in the middle of remodeling the accomodations, but my understanding is that they have a fair number of newly remodeled rooms available. There is also a bar for mom and dad, but I'm not sure if it's open only when the outdoor pool is open or year round.
