Hello.

Grateful if we could get some help.
We would like to live within the boundary olf Dorothy Hamm middle school.
Does avalon courthouse and avalon clarendon satisfy this condition?
And if yes which one is better? We would like furnished options.Thank you

When some kids have no one to eat lunch with, the counselors will set up lunches with other kids who are asked to join, My other kid is part of one of these groups to help out a kid.

The grades are also separated by floors so that the younger kids are away from the older kids - this does reduce bullying although I have no doubt in grade bullying still happens.

Finally even though the school is large (DHMS is currently underenrolled) the teachers know the kids and keep track of grades etc. I got a call from one of the teachers when my kid's grade were slipping and we were able to get her back on track.

This is very encouraging.Thank you very much.

I have a few questions if you don't mind. We will of course phone the school soon if we settle for it but would like to know:

1)Does the school provide school bus?
2)Our daughter will turn 13 in october this year, do you have an idea which grade she will join?Or is it dependent on entry exams?
3)Which region will you recommend us to look for a house/apartment?
4)Is it sure that we get the school if we are within its boundaries?
5)Since we will be renting do you know how long should the lease be to obtain admission.

Thank you

That budget will pretty much put you in Kenmore/Gunston zones, though you might find a few in other zones.
FWIW I wouldn't stretch too hard to get in to the wealthiest schools, I think it can be tricky to navigate being a "poor" kid at a wealthy school.

Haven't found many options on zillow and redfin. But saw the courthouse plaza at around $3100. Is that a good price?

Do you have a budget in mind?

Initially we said not more than $2500. When we were considering Vienna and Mclean we had several options. But it seems we will have to reconsider for Arlington. Searching on redfin and Zillow. Looking at the best options for 2 beds-2 baths.

Rosslyn goes to Yorktown HS

Checking on redfin. It will probably be courthouse-clarendon. Thanks

Thank you.will check everything.
Oh and recommendations from ex colleagues of my husband now working in the US. But regarding schools they cannot help because either they have no children or their children attend private schools.

Since we don't have any experience of the US, we are basing ourselves on our requirements. Meaning looking for a school our child will be happy to go to and since no car at the start, a walkable region and easy access to metro and public transportation. Any recommendation is most welcome.
For Dorothy Hamm, which region near metro is recommended? Courthouse and Clarendon? For virginia square and ballston, it's Swanson?

Are you looking for apartment, townhouse, or house?

Closer to Clarendon, VA Square, Courthouse, and Ballston metro stops would be ideal. Check specific location though because boundaries are close.

Where is work location approx located?

Regarding accomodation it will depend on the price.

That could work as well - those neighborhoods are close to Rt 50.

In addition to metro, look at bus routes on Langston Blvd and Rt 50.

Will.thank you

We are looking for good academic records, conducive environment for learning, diversity, good discipline, extracurricular activities(swimming would be a plus), 'friendly' educators/teachers. We have been looking at ratings on several platforms and some reviews are concerning. We are worried about bullying since she will be joining in March. So a school with welcoming students will be great. Now, someone mentioned IB, this would be a plus since she has been studying in a british style framework.

If leaning towards IB, I’d go for a home in the boundaries for Hamm/Washington-Liberty.

Hamm has a nice environment for kids - less toxic than Swanson. No significant bullying.

Thank you. We are reassured. Do you have any suggestion for such a region please. Ideally near the metro for commuting to DC?Thank you

^ asking for location because some of the bus routes might be better than metro.

Location of work is Pennsylvania Avenue. And our preference is Dorothy Hamm i think. But will a closer look at Thomas Jefferson

Most people here are nice in real life. Don’t judge off of DCUM - it attracts crazies. LOL

Our experience so far on DCUM has been all positive. We are very grateful for all the useful info. So nice of everyone to take the time to answer. We really appreciate.

It’s a very transient area (state dept) so kids come and go all of the time. If she has decent social skills she will be fine.

You could ask the principal/homeroom teacher if a nice kid in her homeroom could help her get acquainted with classmates/have a seat with them at lunch.

Thank you so much for your time and invaluable information and advice.🙂
