OP here, yes the Metro tickets are very expensive. Like about the cost of a modest car payment...
OP here, you all seem cool and lovely neighbors, I must say.
Janney keeps coming up on our list of schools to attend. And I love the sound of Friendship Heights though the SFH are on the wee side for me. We live in a huge house just now and you may have to pull my walk-in pantry from my cold dead hands.

If he becomes a regular metro commuter, chances are he will begin to loathe it.

Maybe not. But it would be ideal to save the Metro rides for special occasions. He does love the train but he has never lived with real winters before. The getting to and from the train in lousy weather would become a real drag.
And ideally he should have the option of driving should something happen with the trains.

After a while the quirkier neighbours thing started to get a little old for us so we moved to CCDC. Both areas great schools and neighbours. Super walkable.

22:20, define quirky. Vegan? Or phobic about airline contrails containing poison from the government? We've lived next to both and the latter is too quirky now that I am a mother."

No quirky as in "I have a crazy overgrown garden that looks like a maze created by mentally ill people and I also have a broken chair collection on my front porch and newspaper in my windows but I'm totally nice to talk to"
or "I carry my 'water bottle' to walk my dog every night and am completely unaware that all the other dog walkers can smell the vodka on my breath. Please swerve to avoid me as I lurch drunkenly into the street to prove a point that we need sidewalks"

Ah. Yes, that IS too quirky.
10:44, I got that feeling as well. That's why I am really pleased to have discovered this forum. This kind of input is invaluable, thank you everyone.

20:05, thank you for that tip about the Metro trains, certainly important info to have and not readily apparent from the Metro websites etc.
15:43, he could drive if we lived in SS area, take the train from Rockville. That's the theory at least.
Is there a reason no one is mentioning the Metro to and from Rockville? Or just a a preference to live anywhere but Rockville?
15:27, my DH rode the Red Line from Rockville to his office, said it was a breeze.

I was assuming we could buy in downtown Rockville, not true?

And yes, 20901. But THAT commute seems awful.

I agree about Glover Park.

We are moving to the DC area from out of state. My DH's office is just in front of the Friendship Height's metro station on the Red Line. So far we are casting a broad net for neighborhoods for our family of three. Our DS starts kindergarten next fall and will be in a private pre-school until then.
Rockville seems a good option because the of the Metro. We found a house we love in Woodmoor but the travel seems egregious. Our budget is 800k max. Also looking in Kensington, Takoma Park, AU and Glover Park. I am an artist who works from home so friendly neighbors and a sense of community are very important.
We hale from Los Angeles where we lived in Echo Park and most recently Eagle Rock. So we had great restaurants and a great small public school. The DC area equivalent would be......?
We are moving to Maryland from out of state next month. So far we are casting a broad net as to neighborhoods, the main restriction being a humane commute to Chevy Chase for my DH. Our DS is starting kindergarten next fall. Any tips about a great Kindergarten program at a MoCo school?
Our housing budget can go as high as 800k.
