We are moving to the DC area from out of state. My DH's office is just in front of the Friendship Height's metro station on the Red Line. So far we are casting a broad net for neighborhoods for our family of three. Our DS starts kindergarten next fall and will be in a private pre-school until then.
Rockville seems a good option because the of the Metro. We found a house we love in Woodmoor but the travel seems egregious. Our budget is 800k max. Also looking in Kensington, Takoma Park, AU and Glover Park. I am an artist who works from home so friendly neighbors and a sense of community are very important. We hale from Los Angeles where we lived in Echo Park and most recently Eagle Rock. So we had great restaurants and a great small public school. The DC area equivalent would be......? |
I live near Woodmoor (you are talking about the Woodmoor in 20901, right?) and work downtown. I drive, personally, but I'd take red line if I could (I don't work near a metro station.) Your DH can take the red line from Forest Glen or DTSS and hop off right at his Friendship office. Easy!
AU Park is also lovely. Glover Park is nice but too pricey for what you get...no metro, small attached houses, zero parking, no yards. I don't know much about Kensington but hear people love it. I'd stay out of Rockville. The commute would kill your DH. |
Why not try Friendship Heights?? We live there and love everything you listed: great neighbors, terrific food/activities an easy walk from home, and public elementary is good. (We don't use it, but our neighbors do.) We paid less than $800k for our house. |
15:27, my DH rode the Red Line from Rockville to his office, said it was a breeze.
I was assuming we could buy in downtown Rockville, not true? And yes, 20901. But THAT commute seems awful. I agree about Glover Park. |
why not CC DC? we are a family of 4, bought 2 years ago a 3bd for less than 800K, I walk to Friendhip Heights in 10 minutes, our kids go to a public school we love, we have only one car (my DH works out of town) we walk everywhere, area is full of playgrounds, families and kids, we feel a great sense of community, waling distance we have the library and community center, Politics and Prose and the Avalon theater, Wilson's swimming pool. bethesda and downtown DC are a close metro ride (I even ride my bicicle to work downtown spring to fall - and we actually even walk to Bethesda sometimes). we love the area and for your husband the commute would be great. commuting from and to Rockville and Tacoma Park would not be mumch fun |
How about Shepherd Park or Colonial Village. It's a really quick drive through Rock Creek to the other side of the park into Friendship Heights. It takes me 7 minutes. Very nice communities. 800K will get you a nice house. |
Is there a reason no one is mentioning the Metro to and from Rockville? Or just a a preference to live anywhere but Rockville? |
I would advise staying on the west side of the red line-- someplace between Friendship Heights and Rockville seems good and I think 800k should get you something reasonable.
Commuting from Silver Spring to Friendship Heights sounds pretty awful to me-- at least on public transportation. |
It's very easy and quick to drive to Friendship Heights from Woodmoor. You just go down 16th Street, turn on Military Road, and that takes you directly to Friendship Heights. |
15:43, he could drive if we lived in SS area, take the train from Rockville. That's the theory at least. |
I commute from Rockville to downtown DC, so I would LOVE a Rockville to Friendship Heights commute. ![]() There are a few pockets of older houses near downtown Rockville that I love, and they should fall in your price range. |
It really depends on what you want... $700 - 800 is doable in the au park/friendship heights/cc dc area if you can see yourself in one of the smallerl charming pre-war houses in these neighborhoods (although, these houses have been flying off the shelves lately). But, if you're looking for a suburban tract house with lots of space (which I get the feeling you are), you're going to be looking outside the beltway, simple as that.
I'd kill myself commuting across the entire red line though, and driving from up there can't be that much better. |
I'm sure others will correct me, but I think the areas near the Rockville metro are not very nice. There are certainly nice parts of Rockville though. But it's not clear why you WANT to be in Rockville when there are plenty of closer options in your price range. I think that's why PPs are suggesting what are good options to consider. If you are looking for an artsy community you might want to look at places like Brookmont and Cabin John. No metro, but a 10 minute drive to FHts. |
I live in Chevy Chase a few blocks from the Friendship Heights metro and have made the commute to Woodmoor several times as my OBGYN is out that way. The best way to do it is Colesville through Silver Spring to Portal through Rock Creek Park to Wise/Chestnut St. and then out to Western which takes you to the heart of Friendship Heights. The only part I'm not sure about is the inbound traffic on Colesville in the morning.
As an FYI, we have at least three friends who live in Woodmoor (DH works close by in Silver Spring) and the houses there aren't any bigger than the ones you'll find in ChCh or AU Park. If you like Woodmoor you might also want to look along East West Highway between 16th St. and Connecticut. |
Check these out and let us know if any of these work for you. Inventory is so low though it isn't very representative.
You give a watch on parkwood in 20814. http://franklymls.com/default.aspx?m=R&l=600K&h=800K&s=20814 |
