Looking for parents with past experience. It looks like the MS teams are smallish (22 kids). Are most of these kids on travel teams? 8th graders? Trying to set expectations for my kid before she tries out. Given Arlington has 5 levels of travel teams at each age level, there is a bunch of talent that could try out. Or are those kids too busy already? |
My daughter played in middle school as a 7th grader. She is athletic and a good player but only ever played rec. she made the team but rarely got to play in the games. There were quite a few travel players on her team and also the coach was a travel coach who knew several of the players from being their coach. Needless to say, he had favorites. Honestly the one thing that really irritated me was that he didn’t really coach the girls who weren’t playing. So she didn’t play and didn’t really learn anything new. She chose not to play for school in 8th grade. She still plays rec soccer. |
When do they announce try outs for sports? We don’t even know what sports there are, let alone when they ours occur. Kid doesn’t have any info either. |
I don’t think for a couple of weeks. There’s an after school activity fair sometime soon I think. |
Boys Soccer Tryouts start Sept. 13, and the girls season will be after the boys finish. |
It depends on the school, look at the athletics tab on your schools website. |
Unless your kids is a rec phenom, they will not make the cut because of the deep bench of travel players who join. It’s free coaching and more high caliber game play; it’s a good deal for parents paying $$$$ for travel teams. |
Anyone know where you can see the results? Do they have a playoff? |
It’s a huge bummer that basically starting in middle school, if you aren’t already playing travel your opportunities to play mainstream sports for your school like soccer or basketball go way down. |
I think it depends on what middle school you are trying out for and not sure this is a new or unique to arl middle schools or soccer v. basketball and other team sports. |
It’s true. On our middle school soccer team there was only one kid who was not a travel player (kid did play ADP and on a top rec team though). |
I think some schools take it more seriously than others! |
Okay, sure maybe you have one travel sports team to play other schools, but why don't they have intramural basketball/soccer etc rather than no-cut frisbee and cross country? Have a JV and a couple intramural, because these are the sports the kids want to play and its a public school so everyone should have opportunity. |
