Autism at 8 months?

Anonymous
I know official autism diagnoses often don't occur until 2+ years, but I am having serious milestone anxiety and am worried that my 8 month old DD is autistic. She smiles a lot but doesn't really laugh, doesn't wave hello/goodbye, doesn't always respond to her name, etc. From a physical development standpoint, she has been army crawling for about a month but it has not transitioned to traditional crawling. She is pulling herself up to standing with support though. Maybe this is all normal, idk, I'm a first time mom and am really spiraling!

That all sounds normal but you should talk to your pediatrician about it at your 9 month appointment.

But seriously that all sounds completely normal.

Sounds mostly normal. One of my kids didn’t laugh much as a baby. Lots of smiles, and laughter came around a year. He also basically skipped crawling, and the other two didn’t crawl until 10 months. It’s not a considered a key milestone- sitting up, pulling up, standing, and walking are.

Does she respond to other sounds? My first thought would be check her hearing again at her next ped visit. I understand the spiraling feeling!

Sounds normal to me. Is she babbling?

OP here: I'm honestly not sure what counts as babbling. She says "ma ma ma ma" "da da da", she was in a raspberry blowing phase about 6 weeks ago, and has started clicking. But she doesn't imitate us when me or her dad makes one of the sounds she can say. She doesn't follow basic commands "grab your block" but then again I never made a conscious effort to teach her vocabulary like "block" until I started down this rabbit hole a few days ago! i will ask about this at her 9 month appointment but just looking for some peace of mind in the meantime.

This all sounds normal to me. My daughter (now 2 and extremely social/verbal) did not crawl until 9mos. Not even really close. She was too fat to lift her body, we think, lol. Also firstborns are slower to crawl -- no big siblings to chase!

I think that stuff is later. 8 months is too young to expect that kind of thing.

Mine army crawled until 11 months and she is not delayed at all. She was just really good at army crawling and I think saw little reason for change. I don't think crawling is even on the list, they mostly care about pulling up at that age iirc.

Does she make eye contact? If so all of this sounds 100% normal. To the extent that she was behind on something like crawling - which it doesn't even sound like she is - that isn't even indicative of autism.

I think you’re expecting too much at 8 months, but I agree that it’s a good idea to have her hearing checked.

Your pediatrician should be checking her hearing (but going to an ENT is also great).

Here’s the thing about autism. If your child has it, they have it. She’s too young to do anything about it yet, so just love her.

Also you don't need to consciously drill her on vocab. Babies learn language by absorption, as they have since the beginning of time. It's like how immersion environments (where only the foreign language is spoken) are the best way to learn a foreign language.

Totally normal.

What you’re describing sounds fine. Does she point/wave/look where you point? How does she get your attention?

Sounds like a totally normal eight month old to me.
