Newton crib mattress

Is this necessary / worth it? I didn't have an expensive crib mattress for my first two kids, but my friends all told me I need to get this mattress. It's $300 with the Labor Day sale, but still very pricey. Would love your thoughts. Thank you!

Definitely not necessary (as you said, you have two other kids that didn't have one), but we're very happy with ours and would buy it again. Lightweight, easy to clean, breathable.

I love mine and would definitely purchase again.

I bought one for my second child and love it. I don’t need it anymore and thought about placing it on Craigslist since it is washable. I’ll look into doing that since someone may want it.

If you can afford it, get one. It’s awesome.

I have two and really like them. Not "necessary" but great!

It was a splurge for us and I love everything about it. Worth the money in my opinion.

Yes! Definitely worth it for peace of mind. We have one for each kid.

You really can breathe through it! DH tried it out before our older child was born and stayed with his face smashed into the mattress and cover for a full thirty minutes. Plus it’s so clean. No possibility of dust mites.

I would say it was a necessity.

Choose not to get it. Partly due to negative reviews on Amazon (which admittedly are a small minority) and also no real evidence that it is better than other mattresses. Not worth it in my opinion.

Try breathing through a regular baby mattress. I think the Newton is worth every penny. DS is four and still sleeps on it in his toddler bed. It’s also unbelievably easy to clean if he wets the bed. And no dust mites.

No no no no. No. As someone with plenty of extra income to buy all of the baby items I want and more, and who works in public health, this is SO UNNECESSARY. And telling women - many without vast amounts of discretionary income - that this is an “essential item” is just flat out misinformation. There are tons of studies the AAP has done on the Newton mattress. There is zero data to support any of the claims they say. Is it breathable? Yes. Has it been proven to reduce SIDS? Nope, babies have (sadly) died of SIDS while sleeping on the Newton.

These companies drive their bottom line on fear, not science. And they prey on vulnerable women who hear “breathable mattress - makes sense to me!” - what you’re not hearing is how many chemicals they have to put in that product to make it so, how the washing guidelines for that mattress make it more perceptible to bacteria, etc. If you have discretionary income to spend on it then go ahead, it’s a choice. But this is NOT an essential item based on any amount of science. Period.

Fair enough. But I thought the Newton was low-emissive chemicals and washable. Are there any mattresses out there you can wash and not worry about bacteria or mold growing?
