The dad of one of the girls on my daughter's U13 soccer team keeps asking people to drive her to a tournament this weekend. My daughter is not vaccinated yet, and I see by this girl's birthday on teamsnap that she is not vaccinated yet either. I get that the actual soccer will be outdoors, but I personally would not want to bring an unvaccinated kid that I do not know in my small car. This guy has asked me personally, as well as sending out three messages on teamsnap. I said I didn't think it would work for us when he asked me in person, and he seemed irritated.
Are people doing this? During a pandemic, when DD is still not vaccinated, I would drive a good friend of DD's, where I knew the family but not someone I don't know. Am I being unreasonable? |
| OP, I don't think you're being unreasonable--you're doing what you think is best for your family's health and safety. Thre are over a dozen other families on your DD's team who are probably feeling the same way. |

Masks, OP.
You buy child-size KF94s, and you give one to this girl when you drive her. Your child can wear one too, and you can wear your N95 or whatever. I know this was pre-Delta, but I drove a friend to his hardcore chemo appointments for weeks. We wore KN95s (the N95 were reserved for medical personnel at the time), I sanitized his part of the car before he got in every single time, and no one caught Covid. Of course, you're not obligated to drive anyone's kid! |

Before all my adult friends were vaccinated - I drove kids but had them wear masks in the car and open windows.
Now we are allowing kids to play indoors and do drive without those precautions but you could also do those precautions if worried. |
| I don't think it's a big deal if the kids wear masks, and you can keep the windows open too. This parent needs help getting his kid to soccer, that's not unreasonable to ask the team for a carpool. |
| if concerned but want to help out, have her wear a mask inside the car. |
I find it odder that by U13 they don't have people that they are close enough to carpool with instead of resorting to team snap. Our U12 team is carpooling almost like normal |

I personally don’t carpool or drive other players to/from practices or games due to COVID concerns even though we are fully vaccinated. We don’t necessarily trust everyone to drive safely either.
Aside from the above, the other options is to make everyone in the car wear masks and open all windows & sunroof while driving. |
Kids change teams, and therefore might not have been together for years? |
| Shouldn't a U13 be 12? So why aren't they vaccinated? |
| I think you’re being wise OP. I don’t judge others who are wiling to take the risk but I personally stopped doing carpools due to Delta and my son is vaccinated. This isn’t to say I never drive anybody else’s child. It’s just that I’m selective. The other child must be vaxed. I don’t allow him to ride with others if I don’t know vaccination status or there will be an under 12 sibling. For us, some risks are necessary to live life and some are not. For example, he does take a school bus (which I hate) because we want him in school. And obviously he is exposed at lunch. But that’s where we chose to take our risks. Aside from that our rules are indoors only when both masking and distancing are an option. |
| OP, do whatever you feel comfortable with. But to answer your question, yes, we're sharing rides. Kids wear masks and windows are open. For me personally, the added risk among kids who are already spending time together regularly outdoors is minimal. |

As an ES PE teacher around 500+ unvaccinated kids, I can say I wear a mask and also make sure that air is flowing through my gym with fans, large air purifier, and doors cracked open. I am vaccinated and all these precautions are only for the kids. I am not worried about them getting badly sick from Covid but I am trying to lessen the chance of any kid catching it in the gym and having to quarantine - which is a big hassle for their families and such to take off.
All this being said- I would have them wear a mask, and crack the windows with AC running with outside air coming in if you decide to drive them. |
| I would say no just because it is annoying that he rudely asking. I bet he has never offered to drive anyone else's kid anywhere. |
the younger ones will still be 11. U13 is a 2009 team |
