Expectant and Postpartum Moms
Thinking of delivering at this hospital, would like to hear any past experiences about it. Can you get a private room??
All the rooms are private. Delivering there any day now so I can't tell you too much more than that!
I delivered my first there two years ago, while they were still remodeling, and thought it was good. The L&D rooms are huge and the nurses are great. The lactation consultant helped me a lot, and there was only one post-partum nurse I didn't really like (she was competent, just not as good a bedside manner as the others). Will be delivering my second there in a couple months.
I just delivered there last month. It looks like the renovations are almost complete. It was my first hospital stay so I have no basis for comparison but it seemed nice for a hospital to me. All rooms are private, and most of the postpartum nurses were really good - only one or two I didn't care for. I think there is a lot of variation in the size of the pp rooms. Bear in mind it is a teaching hospital so you will get visits from med students and residents. That didn't bug me except that some of them came by ridiculously early (apparently you can ask that they come later though). The lactation consultants seemed okay, though very rushed so I didn't get a lot out of meeting with them.
I thought L&D was very good at VHC. Our nurse was supportive of our wishes and was very good about making sure we had whatever we needed. I found PP to be not so good. It was not restful - nurses, students, residents would come in at all hours of the night. The LC didn't visit us until we were literally walking out the door, despite my numerous requests. They are a bit rigid in the PP procedures, (things like wanting to put the baby under a warmer rather than skin-on-skin with mom, wanting to give you pitocin for 3rd stage labor, etc..), but will acquiesce if you are firm. I am delivering there again this summer and have asked my OB if I can discharge earlier than normal as long as everyone is healthy. I got better rest at home than in the hospital.
