DS just started school and came home with a cold that younger kid, nanny, and I all got. Nanny insisted on working even though we gave her the option. Now she’s home sick and her weekend is ruined (plus she needed a covid test like we all did).
In circumstances like this, do you do anything special for your nanny? |
I've never been in that situation, but, I would give her 2 additional days off to take whenever she wants. (added to her vacation balance) |
Nothing for colds. Nanny says it’s the nature of the business. But once my kids gave her a vicious stomach bug right before a holiday weekend and we gave her three extra vacation days and a present. |
If the kid has a cold and I know that before the nanny works, I give her the option of not coming in. But most have wanted to work anyway, saying it comes with the job. When my kids gave my nanny a stomach bug, I paid her for the days she missed (not pto, not sick days - paid her as if she worked those days). When my kids gave the nanny pinkeye, I paid for her doctors visit, medication and days off.
In your case I’d offer to pay for her COVID test and medication. |
Nannies expect to care for sick children, that is a given unlike a daycare or school situation where you are required to keep your child home until they are symptom free for 24 hours. After working with children for many years I have built up a pretty good immune system but every now and then I catch something from the kids. I'm lucky that my employer are flexible with sick time (and I don't abuse it, I have to be really feeling awful to call out since it is a major inconvenience for the family). If you want to do something special maybe add some extra PTO she can use in the future. Also thanks for your consideration. Nannies know sick kids go with the territory. |
I would never have given her an option but told her to stay home. You should pay her for this weekend. Your kid made her sick! |
Honestly, it really is just the nature of working with children. Nannies, teachers, pediatric nurses, daycare workers... we all expect at least four colds a year. -a nanny |
+1 It's nice of you, but I wouldn't pay her extra now for this. Just put it in her annual bonus or Christmas bonus or whatever. |
