hip sandals?

Anonymous
My back is starting to hurt, and my EXTREMELY understanding husband says he is having a hard time being sympathetic if I continue to wear sandals with heels. So. . .any suggestions for some hip, comfortable shoes for summer? I love my Dansko clogs for the winter, but the summer shoes just aren't that great.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance!

Go to a chiropractor. Flip-flops? No support though. I don't think they are hip either but they got me through my first pregnancy. Check out Merrell's website.

On the chiro, I am pushing that to everyone. I'm on my second pregnancy now. 37 weeks. Last time, I was in tons of pain, could barely walk because of sciatica. This time, someone recommended a chiro. I've been going for about 2 months. I sleep longer and feel better all around. good luck with the shoes!

I have no idea what your budget would be.... but you did say "hip" so...I have 2 pairs (one which was purchased on Ebay) of Tory Burch ballet flats. They are soooo well made and comfortable. Worth every penny. She has cute sandal/thongs out for the spring as well.
I thought I read somewhere though that sometimes doctors recommend a shoe with a bit of a wedge or heel (less than 2 inches) to help support your back... I'd look into it.

I second the Tory Burch flats, I wear the "Reva" style which has the gathering in the heel so they don't slide off when I walk. You will definitely need something with some support, so I would not recommend wearing flip flops too much. What about going to one of those "walking comfort" shoe stores (I think that is how it is called)? I know there is one in Old Town Alexandria on King Street.

I only wear flats, and I still have horrible hip pain. I sometimes wear a thermacare on the hip that hurts, the heat definitely makes a difference.

what's wrong with Dansko sandals? I love mine, and they're so comfy- really cushy and they have a low heel.

Clarks has a line with another name that has some cute, comfy sandals. I have a pair of their pink slides that I love.

Born sandals are comfy too.

Dansko has some super cool sandals this summer - more like flat girl shoes with lots of space for air to get in. Anyway, check out comfort one in Dupont.

shoebuy.com has $20 off sandals right now!

Not really an answer to your question but...I stopped wearing heels around the beginning of my 6th month b/c of back pain. Guess what? The back pain didn't got worse with time. I just went back to wearing heels last week (month 7) and I feel better even though my shoes feel a bit tighter than they should. Pre-pregnancy though I always wore 4" heels, almost every day, everywhere and am more comfortable in heels than sneakers or flats. I've convinced my extremely understanding husband that lack of twice daily massages from him may be the cause of my back problems!

Whatever price I may pay later in life for my footwear choices, I can tell you that the heels were not the cause of my present backaches, that would just be the pregnancy.

i wore ones like this when i was pregnant - had an august baby so i had the bulk of the time in hot weather. they were great because they had a rubber sole (no slipping) and were very comfortable and more supportive than flip flops. got them in a couple of colors and pretty much wore them all the time. found them at dsw

I'm completely anti-Tory. The gold disk on the front hurts your feet every time you move your toes, and whenever you walk, it feels like your feet are yelling "TORY BURCH! TORY BURCH! TORY BURCH!" I guess I'm just over them.

Delmans are great, and Uggs just came out with some really cute sandals for spring--they have them at Zelaya in Bethesda. Tres comfy (and I'm over the whole Uggs too as they're also passe, but their spring shoes look more like Stubbs than Uggs).

Nothing is more comfortable that Tory Burch flats, but if you don't want to spend that much I would suggest Dolce Vita for summer shoes, they have cute flats and gladiators. shopdolcevita.com or piperlime has some.

Another thought is Seychelles (they have them at Nordstrom and DSW). I wore them for the last month of my pregnancy and they were so cushy that my feet were in heaven.

To return to this conversation, I've been wearing Earth sandals (Tranquil) and find them the most comfortable now that I am getting big. But most other Earth sandals have straps over the top of the foot that don't fit on my swollen feet, only the thongs fit.

Any recs for similar shoes with low or negative heels or thong type shoes with good support?

I am with the others on the Tory Burch flats. They are a bit more expensive, but worth every penny. I bought them around the end of my 6th month because I noticed that with my changing shape, my center of gravity was off and I was tripping, slipping and falling everywhere. SO I hung up my heels for the first time in a very long time. I've worn my TB's every day - in addition to being flat and stable, they have an elastic back so they don't slip off my feet, they've got rubber soles so I don't slip on marble floors, and since they are a very soft leather they have been able to accomodate my feet swelling in my last weeks of pregnancy.

TRBs are so passe, so if you're looking for "hip", I wouldn't invest in them.

Kork-Ease patent sandals are great for spring, and there are 800 cute pairs of ballet flats out there right now at all different price points.
