| Great neighborhood. Good elementary school but not as good as Waynewood but close |

One of our children attends Stratford Landing this year, having moved from a Virginia private. It's been our 1st public school experience for our kids and we've been very pleased. There's a very nice sense of community, a lot of parent volunteering, and the leadership at the school seems very good. It's very large, as you can see when the kids stream out of the doors at the end of a school day, but that hasn't seemed to be a negative for our child. Our 2nd child will be going there next year, also moving from private.
Many people will tout the positive attributes of Waynewood and no doubt, they are true. But to some extent, I think the response "It's not as good as Waynewood" is conditioned into folks in the Fort Hunt area. For example, when we were looking at the publics in this area for the purposes of buying a home, Belle View Elementary was a stand-out, too, with higher SOL scores than Waynewood. Parents there love the school's relatively small size and nurturing community. Stratford Landing parents love their school which houses the area's GT Center, Hollin Meadows has an incredibly amazing group of core parent volunteers that accomplishes great things and raves about their school, etc. Our approach was to glance at test scores for each school but to rely more on our impressions from having a tour (we called principals to get this), talking to other parents, and attending a school function to see the community firsthand. I have no experience with SACC so I can't comment on that. Best of luck to you! |
