When parents are only applying to Maret, GDS and Sidwell...

Could this seriously be an educational decision for elementary school or is it just pure social climbing strategy?

Social climb to what? This isn’t 18th century France.

+1 They're expensive private schools in an area of solid to great public schools depending on where you live. The demand for these schools is not infinite, and for some people it doesn't make sense to spend 30-40k per year per kid for a private that isn't highly regarded (although GDS and Sidwell are better than Maret academically from what I've seen).

Not necessarily it may be more that they want private schools and there are many reasons why - primarily for us class size is key. Secondly they obviously want liberal co-Ed schools and in DC those are the top 3 (aside from Beauvoir which is progressive but definitely has more country club conservative set then the three named).

Because their kids is bright, they are rich, and for some reason or another they aren't applying to cathedral schools.

Other than a few exceptions, most people who apply to private apply to these + beauvoir/sta/NCS. Why? It's not worth the money otherwise

*Kid is bright. What a strange autocorrect! Sorry.

Or a valuation determination. Some privates are not worth the money. And others just might not be appealing.

Not sure why it's any business of yours. We only applied to GDS, Sidwell, and STA. Those were the only schools where we felt it was worth $50,000/year tuition. We have no need to climb socially, but are people who want good educational value for the money.

That's what pp said.

Some privates are worth it. Others are just expensive.

Maybe more like lack of imagination/ intellectual laziness Coupled with rigid ideas of what high quality education looks like.

There are so many good options in this area and there is no guarantee that all bright, wealthy (or poorer) students will be happy or thrive at schools with the highest snob value.

This can't be pure social climbing if they are not applying to STA/NCS.

We only applied to STA/Sidwell/GDS/Potomac coming from public.
In our mind with a bright kid/no particular challenges those were the schools we were willing to spend $48K for (over public).
If our kids had different needs we would have considered other schools.
