Used Battery Recycling

Anonymous
We have a big bag of used batteries we need to dispose of but I don't know where to take them. We used to drop them off in the collection box at IKEA buy they no longer take them. Any ideas as to where I can get rid of them? (prefer a place in DC or around Silver Spring. Thanks.

You can take them to the Fort Totten Trash Transfer Station at 4900 John F. McCormack Road, NE.

I've taken mine to My Organic Market in the past, but they started making you tape the positive end of the battery due to fires breaking out in the trucks. Needless to say I have no desire to touch all the corroded batteries I have in my baggie and would like another option in the NOVA/Alexandria area.

Logan Hardware takes them. (They also do CFLs and other bad stuff to throw away.) I think they're owned by the same folks as the hardware store in Tenleytown and Dupont too, so those hardware stores might take them too. If those are convenient, maybe give a call before you show up.

I have a whole bunch waiting to be recycled too!
