A splurge item for school? I wouldn't. I'd just put the money elsewhere.

Last year I channeled my angst about remote school by buying super nice wireless noise cancelling headphones- turns out my kid likes his $20 Amazon ones better.

For K I picked out an expensive PBK backpack with matching thermos and lunchbox. Turns out he likes the Lands End clearance flimsy backpack better.

No more splurges. My 2nd grader asked to wait a few weeks into school and then go buy clothes once he sees what other kids have. One year he asked for jeans and then was sad he didn’t have a full week of “soft pants” like all the other boys.

Yup. I’m an unabashed consumerist, but my kids don’t like/appreciate expensive things. Plan an activity with them instead of buying stuff.
