Ivy Admission Rates from APS

Anonymous
According to Arlington Magazine for Class of 2025:

Brown - 2.2%
Columbia - 1.2%
Cornell - 9.5%
Dartmouth - 2.8%
Harvard - 5.1%
Penn - 4.5%
Princeton - 1.4%
Yale - 3.9%

Looks like the APS admissions rates are lower than the overall rates for all but Harvard and Cornell. Within APS W-L did better than Yorktown. Why don’t APS students fare better?

Because Ivys don’t want another umc kid from a wealthy suburb?

+1 With 1500 kids on average at these schools, you can't have tons of students from any one district.

Because instate tuition is pretty good in VA so lots of people choose UVA and others?

This. And most of the kids who get in either have an incredible hook or are legacies.

No. Most of the Ivies are cost-free for students with household incomes under $150k. It's a better deal financially for all but the upper 5% to chose an Ivy.

That’s not the competitive students at Yorktown

+1 We are a SA family living in a condo making just under that. Most Yorktown families aren't making less than 150K

I had four kids go through APS. None reported to anyone what schools they got into or didn't get into. These numbers are meaningless.

According to SCHEV, which compiles official admissions statistics for the State of Virginia, for the graduating class of 2020, 484 Arlington high school students applied to UVA and 168 were accepted.

Yet, Arlington Magazine reports for that same year that 456 students from just the public schools applied and 123 of those were accepted.

For the magazine's numbers to be accurate, it would mean that only 28 private school students from Arlington applied to UVA in the class of 2020 -- and every single one of them plus 17 more were accepted.

Bottom line: the numbers being reported by Arlington Magazine are demonstrably inaccurate.

Ew. Just ew.

You have better success getting into an Ivy going to TC Williams and performing very well there - or one of the low performing Fairfax County high schools because it makes you more competitive. They can only take so many kids from each school/district (This applies to Thomas Jefferson as well).

The Cornell number looks pretty good. But other than that, these reports don’t paint a good picture.

So about a 35 percent acceptance rate.
