2 year old got really sick from daycare 3 weeks ago, but almost recovered for almost 1.5 weeks except he is still coughing on and off during day and night. We took him to see pediatrician 5 times already the first 2 weeks he was sick, it was just viral, not covid. And, I had called nurse that there is nothing they can do and ask me don't bring him in unless he gets worse. They say coughing could take weeks to be over with. Yesterday, he coughed so bad that he puked at sleeptime, but other than coughing, he is fine. What can I do to get over his coughing ? I got infected by him and was home sick for 2 weeks, but I got recovered fully already.
Maybe a humidifier?
Have him sit in a steamy bathroom every night. Coughs can linger forever. Is it a dry cough or productive?
Yes to humidifier, steamy showers and Nose Spray too, it helps with the post nasal drip and congestion that causes the coughing. Ped didn't recommend any of this? I would consider looking for a new one....
humidifer, baby vicks on chest, honey or honey-based cough syrup
All of the suggestions above and this one, also prop up the pillow at night, it helps with the breathing. You might also try putting baby vicks on feet abd wear socks before bed, idk why but this helps my DC sleep well when sick. |
Is it a dry cough or wet cough?
This is OP. I hear mostly wet cough, and I think there are mucus stuck at his throat but he does not know how to spit them out. He does not have runny nose for the last week, but he keeps telling me to wipe his boogies which are none.
My 20 month old is also in daycare and was coughing for about 3 weeks as well. He just got rid of it. Doctor said just wait it out. There’s also a RSV surge going across the nation among kids

This doesn’t directly answer your question but it’s completely normal for a cough to last a full month (for a child or an adult). I am amazed by that every time I get sick. I end up scheduling a medical appointment for myself somewhere in week 3 because I think surely something must be wrong since I’m still coughing 3 weeks later, and every time, my doctor tells me it’s normal to cough for a month. And then I remember that she said that the last time too and she was right.
So that doesn’t help your child get well any faster. But to the extent you’re worrying that this isn’t normal, it’s not time to worry yet. |
Did they check him for Croup? My 15 month old had Croup and RSV in July and just got Croup a second time this week. Both times they gave her a liquid steroid in the office and it really helped the coughing and inflammation. Apparently, Croup and RSV have been really prevalent this summer.
This is op, we just take him to see pediatrician yesterday for his nonstop coughing day and night, and he vomited a few times at day night/day due to excessive coughing. Pediatrician says his lung is clear, no prescribed medication, and just hope he gets over and fight over it by himself in an another 1-2 weeks. They say there is post drip in his mouth/nose, and I am worried because I have done whatever I could have done with humidifier, steam hot bath, pop up pillow, honey (he does not take) and etc. It is almost 4 weeks.
