ACPS TAG appeal?

Has anyone successfully appealed a TAG rejection in acps with a low NNAT score? Kiddo whiffed with a fairly average score (unprepped, but still). We have WISC data (unrelated to this application) and I’m not sure if we should include it, or if it will just confirm the rejection, since some scores were decent and others just average. FSIQ was 126

Is this useful, or should I leave it out?

Obviously all parents think their kids are amazing, but I’m kinda surprised scores weren’t higher. Spouse and I were both in gifted programs and tested with high iqs as kids, and we recognize similar qualities in our kid. but scores don’t show this. I truly believe kiddo needs tag to thrive, but would we be better to just wait and see if particular aptitudes get them in in higher grades? Tia

You should push and do everything you can. A mom in my neighborhood likes to brag about how her kids didn't come close to qualifying for TAG but she bullied ACPS into it.

Hutchings/ACPS is against the program and they've tied it to TC Williams so it will be gone soon.

NEVER let your child sit for the NNAT at ACPS.... a self administered test on the computer in first grade should not be on their record. This test will come back to bite you many, many times. They used this test for 4th grade subject specific tag placement this year!!!!! 10 year olds were chosen for math tag based on an IQ Test they took on the computer when they were 6!!!!! I know kids that did so poorly that their parents had them take the WPPSI at a psychologist because they were concerned about the score. They did so well on the WPPSI that they were put into tag. my child got 130 on WPPSI and 109 on NNAT.

I thought it is CoGAT at 3rd grade and 4th grade, NNAT at first grade.
To op, it is really doesn't matter at lower grades - TAG is just pull out half hour per week thing. Typically they get tested CoGAT at the beginning of 3rd grade, if a kid does well, he/she will automatically enroll into math and LA at 4th grade pull out.

Yeah, the computer based test def didn’t go well for my kid. Do you think an appeal would be successful with the asymmetric numbers above though? fsiq was decent, and gai was 129 I think, but obviously some subtest areas were stronger than others.

I’m less concerned with the lower grade tag stuff, but once they’re in, aren’t they in for all,of elementary school? don’t want to keep messing around with it, would rather just get in early and be done with it. My kid doesn’t do well with computer based tests (at least not so far), so not sure how the cogat will go. Paper and pencil is way better for us.

What is your teacher saying? Do they observe gifted behavior?

Haven’t spoken to them about it, but with the whole zoom school fiasco?— I doubt it.. That’s why I’m wondering if we’d do better to wait a year so this year’s teacher can be an ally on IDing. The teacher did provide some more enriched activities for my kid though, so maybe that’s a good sign.

No, they test everyone for CoGAT regardless if you are in the General TAG or not. In General TAG at lower grade doesn't guarantee your spot in 4th grade.

This year they neglected to administer the cogat at most schools so the only test they used was the NNAT from first grade to determine subject specific TAG placement in fourth grade! Go get independently tested with the WPPSI or WISC. If your child performs well then don’t let them sit for any mass administered IQ tests at school.

What scores do you consider ‘doing well’ on WISC or WPPSI?
