nucal trans test

Anonymous
Hi-I am getting my nucal trans something test this week--the one you do between 11 and I think 12 weeks. I had this before about three years ago for last baby but now it seems like a different test and wondered if anyone could give me feedback on changes in the testing. I noticed that last time I had to drink a huge amount of water and hold it but this time, I was told that there was no need to drink water and hold so something must be different. Please advise--also anyone get baby sex at this appoinment and I am going to Dr. Maclaren at Virginia Hospital center if anyone has an experience with him on this.

Dr. McLaren is wonderful!!! He did my DS's echocardiogram, because of a bad nuchal fold result. Fortunetely for us, we did a CVS and knew our son didn't have a chromosomal disorder. He's very slow and methodical, doesn't miss a beat. I had lost a pregnancy at 12 weeks due to age related downs syndrome and he knew I was wreck during the entire pregnancy-even with having the CVS. You're in good hands! I know for the nuchal fold, I had to have a full bladder, as I did for the CVS. Very uncomfortable, I know. I wanted to pee so bad during the CVS-it was agony and took forever.

Typically, the sex can't be seen until 14-16 weeks, or maybe even later. At my 10 week u/s, the dr. yelled out she thought I was having a boy! She said she only got this particular view in one out of every 400 u/s, and for the life of me, I couldn't see a thing. She was very excited at what she saw. Turns out, it was verified with the CVS I was having a boy!

The thinking behind full vs. empty bladder during an ultrasound seems to have changed. When I was pregnant with my daughter 2 plus years ago it was all about a full bladder, now they want an empty one.

I had an NT done and they wanted something in the bladder, but not for it to be full. I wouldn't not drink because of the test (especially if you are thirsty). At worst, they'll just ask you to go to the restroom if you are too full, or drink more if you are too empty.

I just had a nuchal a few weeks ago and was asked to drink a lot of water beforehand but, due to some admin snafus, I wound up waiting over an hour to see a technician by which time my bladder was enormous and blocking the screen. So the technician asked me to use the bathroom and I had the test done on a mostly empty bladder. Didn't seem to make a difference in terms of getting the test done accurately.
