Expectant and Postpartum Moms
| My OB's office gave me a sheet of ok-to-take medicine that I now can't find. Ugh. I have a terrible head cold and would love to take SOMETHING to clear this sinus congestion. Saline nose spray is doing nothing nor is the neti pot. I am only 10 weeks and wonder if I can take anything anyway, so early? Thanks for any help. |
| My doc ok'ed sudafed, but i can't remember what trimester i was in. i think there is a website ...kellymom or something like that, and it has info on this. |
| dilute some Vicks in boiling water and breath the vapor. a warm shower with shower soother does the trick too. I got such a list but I hate taking drugs even when not pregnant so now I try to stay even further away from them. |

I had such a cold in my late first tri/early second tri and basically tried to stick to the Neti pot (which also didn't do much). You can take plain Claritin (did nothing for me) and Robitussin and Tylenol. Unfortunately, you'll find that whatever you can take for a cold at this stage will not be as effective as, say, the shot of Nyquil you're dying to take. Sorry!
Another thing you could do is go to a CVS or whatever and ask the pharmacist. They will be able to pull up a list of drugs you can take. Been there! Sorry, it sucks. |
| http://www.safefetus.com/ has a very comprehensive database listing the FDA classifications. FWIW, advil is actually considered class B before the third trimester. |
| OP, I FEEL YOU. I have been rocking a major cold for weeks and even have Amoxicillen in my purse as we speak (my ear was red last wed. and the DR thinks I have a sinus infection). I take sudefed here and there and netipot like crazy, but honestly nothing is working. The phlem is so bad at night (when I am laying down) that I start gagging and throw up dinner. Seriously f'd up. |
| I'd hold of on the sudafed, i thought it had been shown to be associated with a birth defect called gastroschisis (think i spelled it right) in which the baby's organs are outside of the body, maybe ok after 1st tri??? |
| also ibuprofen is associated with reducing the amount of amniotic fluid and stressing/possibly damaging the baby's kidneys. and if you take it during the last trimester, the baby may have persistent fetal circulation (in which the hole btw the chambers of the heart doesn't close) |

Try a Neti Pot.

I was told by a few OBs not to take Sudafed until the third tri. Sometimes the old fashioned remedies of hot steamy shower, clear liquids, etc. are what will have to get you through. The neti pot worked for me. Sorry it's not working for you! |
