Tell me about cross country in middle school…

DD has a chance to try out an after school sport in 7th grade. There are no cuts and supposed to participatory. She is interested in cross country but says she is one of the slowest runners of her grade. We run 3 miles as a family each weekend, but we are super slow. Does anyone have experience with cross country at this level?

My kid did XC in MS and loooooooved it! Let her try and see if she likes it! It's a nice group of slightly nerdy kids who don't mind working hard.

My dd runs in college and started at that age. XC and track made her middle and high school experiences great. Give it a try!

My son also had a good experience with MS cross country.

My daughter found cross country to be the greatest group of kids. She participated because it was no cuts. She was also slow, so she just got to turn around sooner so she ran less but basically stayed with the group somewhat. It was overall her best experience with sports so far!

Just FYI - Since it was high school alot of them had air pods to listen to music with their phones.

What are the events in cross country?

For high school it’s a 5k (3.1 mile) run on trails. For middle school it’s typically around 3k.

For MCPS it's a fall, coed sport. They workout 3d per week and then there are about 5 meets over the course of 6 weeks or so.

They run 1.5 miles at the meets. Depending on the host school, everyone runs or a subset. Some schools only invite a certain number from the away school and the home team gets to run their whole team. My daughter did it in 7-8th grades and all her meets were everyone travels and runs. I think anyone could score, but maybe the coach had to designate who were the "team" and who were exhibition, but that's what's great about XC, lots of kids can participate and they are really going for a personal best.

Is this organized by individual schools? I don't see this advertised by my DD's school, but there's Heart and Sole (Girls on the Run).

What are the general running times for kids this age (11- and 12-year-olds)? For a mile? 3k?

If your kid can already run 3 miles, they are already way above average for middle school xc.

Sorry, I meant how long does it take them to run a mile or 3K.
