lunch/ Dinner in Pittsburgh

We'll be in Pittsburgh for a day and are looking for restaurant recommendations. We are open to all cuisines but would love something that is less common around here.

There is the sandwich place that puts fries in the sandwich that was on Diners Drive Ins and Dives. I can't remember the name but you can google it.

People either think Pittsburgh is a great food town or a terrible one. I am in the terrible camp.

From this list I’d suggest altius. It’s at the top of mt Washington with a great view and you can take the incline up which is so very Pittsburgh

I'll save that one for when we don't have the 10 year old tagging along!

I live in Pittsburgh (not a native). It's a regular sandwich with fries on it. There are much better places to go, IMO. I've been there once in the 8 years I've been here and there is one less than 10 minutes from my house.

They seem to have spread into other parts of PA as well. I saw one in Hershey

I'm the pp who said not to eat at Primanti's. This is a very good list. I would not eat at any of the pizza places. I was not impressed with the DC pizza when I lived there but it makes Pittsburgh pizza look amazing. Pamela's has the best pancakes I've ever had. I have not been to Gaucho yet but my friends rave about it and it is very unique so that would be a good choice. In terms of sweets, the burnt almond torte at Prantl's was voted best cake by someone (I believe Huffington Post). They have mini tortes that just hit the spot. Oakmont Bakery is huge and has everything you can possibly think of but it is outside the city in Oakmont. Prantl's has a location in Market Square and in the Shadyside neighborhood (both in the city). Have fun! Pittsburgh is a great city!

The banana hot cakes at Pamelas are not over-rated

I’d suggest the location on 21st. That’s the one Obama visited in 2008.
