Are Howard County Public schools definitely opening

For in person instruction for the upcoming school year? I haven’t seen anything that gives me 100 percent reassurance that school will be in person and am starting to get worried!

Anyone?

There hasn’t been a 100% answer. However the superintendent today just released a notice that masks will be required in schools. I assume they are waiting until the first board meeting (I think it’s 2 weeks away) to make an announcement about what the fall will look like.

Yes I heard about the superintendent’s updated mask guidance so I was wondering if they would also announce whether school would actually be in person or not.

I guess they are waiting until the last minute to decide!

They have not said for certain, but the schools are certainly preparing as if they are. On 7/27, we received an email with instructions and dates for the start of the school year, e.g. when the Family File would open, school bus information, when new teacher assignments would be sent out, orientations and deadlines for new student registrations. So clearly, the schools are acting as if school will be open. They have to. If they waited until an official announcement, there were be no time to complete everything that needed to be done to start a school year.

There is a fully digitalized/virtual option for K-6, but they are only making it available to those who signed the parental commitment back in March/April to the program. Although they said at the time they were trying to gauge interest, and that parents would be able to commit later, they apparently decided that was the enrollment.

They are opening and have said about 1000 times throughout the spring that they are.

Things will be changing very rapidly in the next 4 weeks. Expect anything. Be prepared to change course out of necessity.

What? Like move to a home in a school district that will definitely open?

Yes of course.

Yes they said that, but with new delta variant changes and increased infection and hospitalization rates, this may change. They are fully planning to reopen and have in-person school, but current public health data may change that. So just keep an eye on the news and be prepared for whatever may come.
