Cute Clothes Post 30 lb. Weight Gain?

Anonymous
Can you help? In my late 40s. Life long eating disorders. Have put on 30 pounds. Have a closet full of nothing but size 6s and am now probably a size 12. I have worn nothing but sweats and a couple pairs of jeans/stretch pants for the last 4 years (I am a WAHM). Where can I go for clothes that will look decent on a woman my current age and size? I am 48, 5'5", 155 lbs. I am (or used to be, when I wore clothes), a kind of conservative, "preppy" dresser -- shopped almost exclusively at Talbots. I don't want to spend a fortune b/c I hope not to be this size forever, but I need to get something attractive. Any ideas?

Hummm. . . . maybe Ann Taylor LOFT? You could get a nice pair of jeans, some khakis, and some cute tops.

Size 12 is not big...you can find cute clothes at any of the major chains.

Ann Taylor? I am similarly sized to the OP and anytime I go into AT or ATL it is filled with racks of clothes for 4 foot tall women with no hips and no boobs.

Tunic tops, shoes with a bit of a heel, 3/4 length sleeves or longer, flat front pants, wrap dresses, spanx high waisted power panties, kimono style dresses over pants or leggings now and alone during the summer. Also, pay attention to your hair, make sure it is colored and cut nicely.

I'm 5'3 and was a size 12 from high school until I had kids in my 30's and I never needed spanx until now. It depends on what your shape is, how tall you are, where are you carrying the weight?

The best piece of advice I ever got was not to be married to size. Take a day and go shopping. At 5'5 155 you don't need to be shopping at any special *plus size* stores. Try on a variety of things, and take someone with you that you trust to be honest if you can. When you find things you like, grab the size you think will fit, and a size up just to see.

I have 20 pounds baby weight and I shop at outlets only in the hopes of fitting into my pre-baby clothes. There is Leesburg Outlets and Potomac Mills, or Friendship Heights has a TJ Maxx, Filene's Basement, and a Loehmanns.

Really PP? I'm also 5'4" and 150 and I loooove Ann Taylor Loft! The petite sizes fit off the rack, and I actually wear a size 6 in their sizes because they are so generous through the hips and thighs!

I would NOT go for the tunic top and stretch pants look . . . it isn't the 1980s and that look is so not flattering on curvy women.

How about the Talbot's outlet in Springfield? Lots of stuff, and you can find great bargains.

I'm 5'2" and around 140 and also love Loft - they are the only place I can find pants that fit, are flattering, and are the right length. However, some of the clothes do skew young, although my 71 year old mother just bought a shirt there yesterday.

Macys. Nordstroms. Bloomingdales.

Get a few (a FEW) really nice things that flatter you. It's worth spending the $$ on them if you know you're going to look great.

I cleared out my closet and never filled it back up again. I'm 146 (and dropping, I hope!) but knew it was time to remove the 4s and 6s, too.
