How big is The Corner?
My daughter and I recently toured UVA and spent a good amount of time walking around the corner afterwards. Personally I was surprised and disappointed by how small it was and how few shops/restaurants/bars there were compared to what I’ve seen near other large universities. I’m wondering if there are other side streets that we just didn’t see? As a reference I’m referring specifically to the street where The Virginian is. |

| It’s pretty small. There is a separate downtown. Did you also go there? |

| The downtown is surprisingly dangerous. Charlottesville has a high violent crime rate. According to neighborhood scout it’s in the top 13 percent of US cities for violent crime. It has almost twice the violent crime as College Park for example. |

The Corner is small. Elliewood Ave is the only real side street on the Corner that has anything of interest—a few more restaurants/bars.
The Downtown Mall has more, but it’s about 1.5 miles away. And there’s lots in between on W. Main St. |

The city of Charlottesville is not quite the idyllic little hamlet that many like to think, but to avoid it out of fear of violent crime is silly. And I say this as someone who was a victim of a crime when I was an undergrad there. Stuff happens everywhere. |

Statistics can be manipulated, but PP knows that the entire county in which UMD is located is a dump, so there's that. |

UVa Alum and I now live here. Elliewood is a side street with more restaurants and the local running shop. Also 14th street is another side street with some restaurants and a popular apartment living area for undergrads.
The Downtown Mall has shops, a movie theater, and restaurants and is less popular with undergrads. There is a free trolley that goes between grounds and the downtown mall. It’s not dangerous in that people are lurking in corners ready to assault and stab people. Some of the homeless yell at each other and that can come off as scary. Like anywhere, be aware of your surroundings, don’t stumble around drunk, etc. |

This is 10:13 OP did you keep walking towards the hospital? The Corner area turns into West Main with more hotels, restaurants, and undergrad apartments.
For grocery stores, the closest is at Barracks Rd where there is a Harris Teeter and Kroger. It’s a bit of a hike without a car, but the bus runs there as well. |

The main drag used to be a barbell - the corner one end and the downtown walking mall on the other. Now, the entire things is stores. The Corner has something like 150 businesses. Maybe if someone only looked at the main street, they'd think it's small? There are side streets and businesses tucked behind.
Charlottesville is safe. Use your brain. Take the buses at night and stay with friends. That's what people should do no matter where they go to college. |

This is false. 14th has more shops and restaurants than Elliewood. It sounds like you haven't actually spent much time in Charlottesville. |
