Classrooms for kids <12 will close for 10 days w/ any positives; will there be virtual instruction?

Anonymous
Janney just had a positive in their summer school. They are sending everyone in both summer school classes home for a full 10 days.

If (when) this happens during the school year, is there any planning for virtual instruction or does everyone just miss 2 weeks of school?

Any teachers (or parents) know?

This is crazy.

Teachers have yet to hear anything re: Covid guidance or health protocols

That is crazy. There will be a ton of asymptomatic positives.

Right now, if there is a positive in 6th grade or below (age 11 or below) the entire grade (or in the case of Deal, the entire team of 125 kids) has to be sent home for 10 days.

So is there any plan to educate these kids at home?

I’ve heard teachers will be maintaining Canvas for next year.

Will there be any virtual for the Janney kids? Can they do a PCR test and come back? I'm guessing the answer to both of those is no.

In my mind this will be the biggest question / obstacle for next school year. It seems like the easiest thing would be to have everyone prepared for virtual again.

This is the Janney letter:

This letter is to inform you that an individual who was last present at Janney on July 21, 2021, has since reported a positive test for coronavirus (COVID-19). The individual is no longer on campus and will not return until medically cleared. Upon notification of the positive case, and out of an abundance of caution, the building was cleaned and disinfected, including classrooms, office areas, conference rooms, and other common areas.

Additionally, since impacted in-person cohorts must quarantine for 10 days, students in those two Summer Acceleration Academy cohorts will not report for in person learning during this time.

This to me, is the #1 question we do not have an answer for.

There was concern about learning loss with distance learning.
What now when there is nothing to do at home, no one has a device, there's no pivot to online learning this year.

We're all screwed but this generation of kids is really screwed.

If there is any positive at Deal, the entire team (125 kids) is sent home for 2 weeks under this policy plus ANY cross team kids who are in language, gym, art or off-team math with that kid. A positive could easily take out 200 kids.

Do they get any instruction for those two weeks?

Yup, they watch TV for 2 weeks because the schools are not handing out devices.

I'm going to wait until I see what the plan is when this happens for actual school before I panic about the fact that there's no plan for remote summer school. Remote summer school, after the last year and a half, would really seem more like a punishment than anything else.

I am a DCPS teacher and a parent of ES and MS kids. At the end of SY 20/21 I was so hopeful for a pretty much normal school year for 21/22. I am getting increasingly worried that it won't be what I was dreaming of. I was so ready to be done with Teams. At least I created a lot of digital materials to use last year so pivoting from IPL to DL won't be as hard as doing it the first time. Sigh.

You are missing the point. Summer school is following the OSSE quarantine policy which is also in place for the upcoming school year.

Well that's not good.

Best opt out of testing!
