What to serve for lunch for a play date

Anonymous
I’m hosting my first play date since covid. Kids are 4yo.

What type of food is good to serve for lunch?

Should I get something delivered?

Parent staying? How many kids?

Do not get something delivered. That is over the top.

PBJs and cut up a watermelon.

Hot dogs, watermelon, cucumbers, juice boxes

PB&J cut in triangles or sticks, watermelon with toothpicks, blueberries, a cheese stick.

Don't get something delivered - start small. Pace yourself.

Are parents staying?

I'd probably ask the other parent what their kids likes among a few choices on hand. Like "I'm going to make some sandwiches, we've got pb and j, grilled cheese, and turkey. Or I could make some mac and cheese. What do you think Larla would like?

Watermelon is a great idea. If parents are staying, i might make a nice salad to go with.

If, for some reason, I didn't want to do choices, I'd do grilled cheese. In my experience, it's a popular choice.

I like this approach, give a couple options to the parent and see if their kid has a preference. One of my kids doesn’t like lunch meat but he would be happy with grilled cheese or Mac and cheese or PBJ. I sometimes serve frozen cheese pizza for lunch with sliced cucumbers and some fruit, you could do a nicer kind with a salad for the moms?

Get a rotisserie chicken and some rice and prepackaged cheese sticks and carrot sticks if the kid isn't vegetarian.

I would get some good bakery croissants (not grocery store bakery) and make some chicken salad sandwiches for you and moms. Kids get peanut butter sandwiches quartered, and some cut up raw fruits and veggies.

Kids are allergic to peanut butter.

I would do grilled cheese and cut up whatever fruit and veg is on hand — watermelon, cucumber, etc.

This is 1 or 2 kids and the majority of kids aren't.

This is why Americans are obese. PB&J? Mac and cheese? With some measly sliced cucumbers that the kid will probably ignore.

My 4yo eats hearty vegetable soup, grilled chicken and veggie sandwiches or quesadillas, or salad for lunch. Salad is *not* just for parents
