My health practitioner is strongly recommending that I go on a low glutamate diet. Basically, I have to avoid all gluten, dairy, plus most processed foods, etc. With 3 kids, work, a spouse who does not cook at all, I'm considering hiring a personal chef service who could cook meals that I can easily serve each evening. At least that's what a friend recommended- but she didn't know if one in this area (Chevy Chase, MD). Can anyone provide recs/leads?
Thank you! |
| I’m sorry I don’t have any recs but am curious what the benefits of a low glutamate diet are. |
| Low glutamate? Like MSG? MSG has nothing to do with gluten, which is a protein found grains. |
| Was this like a naturopathic or functional medicine doctor? |
| What is a health practitioner?? Is this voodoo science? I've heard of gluten free for celiac disease, and low FOODMAP diet, but never this. I think you will live on vegetables, fruit, nuts, and meat. |

OP here. Yes, it was a functional medicine doctor - but she does have an MD.
I think the diet was started by a PhD named Katherine Reid - I watched the TED talk - but it was really for a totally different condition that the diet was started for as the founder of the diet had a kid with a developmental issue. However, the diet has helped everything from arthritis, migraines, to ADHD. My doctor thinks it could really help my illnesses. |
| Am guessing that what is being recommended is a low free-glutamate diet -- one that contains real food, but not the manufactured glutamate found in flavor enhancers and protein substitutes like hydrolyzed proteins and MSG. |
| Low free-glutamate diets have also been recommended for Gulf War Veterans still suffering from Gulf War Illness. The diet was tried in an experimental setting and found to be useful. |
| The web page of the Truth in Labeling Campaign has a list of ingredients that contain the problematic ingredients. You can also probably get the list by just googling "Hidden Sources of MSG," or "Hidden Sources of MfG," or find something on their Facebook page. |
