High School with Capacity 1800-2000

Anonymous
Hey I’m a richmonder and long time DCUM reader. Can you all tell me if there’s a recently (maybe since 2012ish) built NOVA high school with a capacity of 1800+ that’s designed well. My school board has been fighting about the rebuild of a high school down here for almost two years so I’m looking at different ideas since they are only focused on arguing.

Thanks!

Wakefield would be the only one in Arlington fully built originally to that capacity. WL and Yorktown have had additions and have that capacity.
Wakefield is a very nice building.

Probably Lightridge or Independence in Loudoun, they’re the newest.

Loudoun - John Champe, Independence, Lightridge, and Rock Ridge are all newer high schools with capacities slightly over 2000.

Meanwhile Fairfax sticks kids in trailers and cheap modulars, ignores sound facilities planning, and twiddles its thumbs bragging about its silly “equity” initiatives.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I don’t know why every school has to start from scratch and reinvent the wheel, sharing designs and plans could save localities huge amounts of money

Ahhhhh.....fairfax and Richmond are cut from the same cloth I see.

Thank you for these suggestions.

There's a new one in Falls Church I think just opening this year built at that size.

Nope - capacity is smaller (1200-1500 students) plus it’s built on a very small site that would only be considered if there were serious space constraints.,

Champe and Rock Ridge are on the old footprint - they’re perfectly fine but the newest and moat updated buildings are Independence (opened in 2019) and Lightridge (opened 2020).

I would not recommend using this high school as a model for any new construction of other schools. Look at others.

Why? APS is looking at it as a model for the new Career Center building.

Because APS is space constrained at that site.

It had a lot of wide open spaces but small classrooms with glass walls. It is not a good environment for students with ADHD. It will be interesting to see how students fit into classes next year when and if they no longer limit class sizes because of Covid. My kid loves it because they can hang out on couches with friends during the school day in lounge areas. That’s not a positive for me.

Again, Woodgrove is the old footprint. It was built in 2010. There are newer high schools in the county that are more modern and recent designs : lightridge and independence.
