Online grocery shopping and delivery

Anonymous
Anybody have any recommendations for a good online grocery shopping and delivery service? I know Peapod (Giant) and Safeway have something - does Whole Foods or Trader Joes? Does anybody have a favorite? Is the produce okay if you order online?

Thanks!

I used Safeway for a while and switched to Giant. It seems like I'm saving a lot of money after the switch. I don't like the produce at either though so I only get salad in a box because sometimes it's been mushed.. It's just not the same as when you pick it out yourself.

Sadly, whole foods does not have a delivery service. I used to use Peapod but found that it was only worth it to me, if I were purchasing a ton of staples (which I rarely do). The produce and fruit options were very dissappointing.

One of the things I miss most about NY is FreshDirect. Great grocery delivery service, produce included. I wouldn't expect much from the produce delivered by Giant and Safeway since I am regularly underwhelmed with their in-store offerings.

Mostly I am just hoping some one reads this and copies FreshDirect's warehouse to customer delivery model.

We love Washingtons Green Grocer.

Box of fresh produce shows up every week for $29. You can customize/change orders up to night before delivery. Website substitutions function is a little quirky until you get the hang of it. Nice, friendly delivery folks - show up like clockwork and recycle boxes. Local/MD business.

Mostly like it because I'm too lazy to get to Whole Foods on the good produce days. DH does most of the cooking and likes flexibility to pick what he wants from his office without worrying if it's in season or not.

Much of the stuff is the same brands as Whole Foods, but for some reason tastes better. (Possibly just in my head, but DH and DCs seem to notice too.)

Hope this helps. They do dairy, too.

Safeway costs less than Peapod and delivers fresh bakery items and liquor. But they've made quite a few order mistakes and their produce is terrible. I think that may depend on the selection at the local Safeway - I understand they fill orders from certain stores closest to the delivery address. They also delivered items past the expiration date. Peapod doesn't have fresh bakery goods or liquor but that might depend on the delivery area. Peapod's produce is ok and the delivery people are usually nice and polite and seem genuinely surprised and grateful to receive a tip. I've also have had very few order mistakes.
