Wearing jewelry during the game

My son has a religious necklace that he wears and during last weekend’s super y game, the referee told him to either take it off or tape it down. We taped it down but wanted to see if anyone else had any similar experience.

That is pretty standard practice. Expect it to be the norm.

I get that it’s religious and important to him, but he doesn’t want it to turn into a garrote during the game. It’s a safety thing and I’d plan to tape it down or take it off every game - preferably take it off. Your best case is that it just gets broken during a game…

My son has a similar necklace and removes it before games and practice.

Removing jewelry is standard practice in sports.

You don't wear jewelry when playing soccer.

Remove it and put it back on when the game is over. t’s dangerous.

Actually the referee was wrong to allow it. Right from the Laws…,

All items of jewellery (necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, leather bands, rubber bands, etc.) are forbidden and must be removed. Using tape to cover jewellery is not permitted.

You can tape wrists and write on that.

Parents should wear whatever they want.

My son takes his off for every game. Standard.

Doesn't matter what it symbolizes. The physical effects are the same.

This. It doesn’t matter whether it has religious significance or not — this is for the safety of the players, including first and foremost your kid who is most likely to be the worst injured by something like that.

Don’t wear jewelry while playing soccer.

Safety issue more than anything.

FIFA and Club rules, no jewelry.

Have him leave it at home, and put it on after he showers after the game.

Even girls with just pierced ears with small studs have to take them out.

Everyone saying no jewelry is correct by law and principle. However, what makes this tough and I'm sure what prompted OP to post this is the lack of consistency with the referees allowing jewelry. Sometimes they allow jewelry as long as it's taped, sometimes they follow the Laws and don't allow anything.
