Its sad when your children can not watch political news

I always keep the TiVo pause button close by in case war or natural disaster coverage with graphic images comes on the news but its ridiculous that I need to turn it off during political news. The republican supporters sending death threats, yelling baby killer, and sending nooses is disgusting.

I have memories of hearing the news with my dad when I was five. I remember pieces of the political campaigns, Walter Cronkite, and little parts of speeches. I would play in the family room while he watched the news and it is a nice memory. I developed a better sense of current affairs as a kid that I held onto through high school and college. Now my kids can barely watch anything because of the stupidity in riling up dangerous people to get votes. It sucks.

It's really scary. It reminds me a lot of different developing nations and riots and violence over what seems like nothing. I understand being mad and hurt and scared by this health care reform. I don't understand vandalism or threatening people (or worse) at all.

We as a society seem to be regressing.

Years ago, the New York Times, when they put a large, full-color picture of a man killed in street fighting in Bosnia, I think. A corpse. In color. Close up, eyes open, blood everywhere. I called them that very day and canceled my subscription, and I didn't even have kids then.

I am also distressed at the growing distance between imagery appropriate for children, and the imagery that the"news" subjects us to. It's as if the Murdochs of the world said, hey, Saving Private Ryan made a gazillion dollars... let's cash in!

Wasn't it a republican who yelled baby killer on the house floor? Isn't it the right wing pundits that are inciting the violence? The left wing pundits are idiots themselves but they are not cheering on the dangerous nuts.
