APS: Snack time?

Anonymous
I have a kindergartener going to ATS this fall. Do kids in APS get snack time? If so what do you pack? And what containers do you use? Just trying to get everything ready.

Our APS elementary got rid of snack time during covid because kids weren't allowed to remove their masks in the classroom. We ended up sending our kid, who can't make it to lunch without a snack, with a fruit smoothie with a straw so she could drink without taking off her mask.

During my kids’ kindergarten years at ATS, snack time was not permitted - though that was 3 years ago so maybe it’s changed.

This is very dependent on the school and teacher so you need to wait to hear specifics from your school. Whatever you send should be something easy to open and quick to eat.

At Oakridge the kids definitely had snack time. Sometimes lunch was at 11 in the morning (that was kindergarten I think) so i don’t see how other schools could decide not to have snacks! Those poor kids.

Please, with the drama. Your kid should be able to make it 4 hours without dying. This is a good experience for them to build up their stanima.

Or their stamina.

Would you want to eat breakfast at 8, eat again at 11, and not again until 4 or 4:30? Every day? Personally I would get hungry and it would be harder for me to focus and learn well. I think most five-year olds with this eating schedule get grumpy come 3PM, which is why a lot of schools have snack time, and for that I am grateful. I think there are better ways of building stamina than being hungry every day.

Hey, no need to convince me. I was just correcting the other poster’s misspelling of the word. I agree with you. A bag of goldfish helped my kid in APS K. We bailed on the school system for other reasons, but K was good.

You’ll get a letter the week before school starts that outlines snack and lunch times. Our K class had afternoon snack bc lunch was at 10:20!

Ha sorry about that! I didn’t even notice the typo.

Thanks everyone! I guess I will wait and see what the school says but brought a small snack box and stasher bags to be prepared. I’m due end of august with my third and figured I need to get everything ready before the baby comes. Gonna post again with another question. You all are lifesavers!

It will depend on the teacher. My DD's teachers have typically had the kids bring snacks out to recess, which I find annoying, but there's not anything I can do about it.

Claremont has snack time (even during covid).

generally K has snack (and most other grades) but it's dependent on lunch timing. Early lunch, afternoon snack, and vice versa. Teaches appreciate something simple, quick, and non-messy for snack. Don't send lasagna or soup for a snack. Cheese stick and pretzels- yes.
