This is the OP. Wheatley is relatively near my house and has a nice new building. I heard the principal used to be at Janney. Most Hill schools are gaining in popularity and have sizable wait-lists. My younger kid will be applying next year for pre-K 3. He may not get into older child's school. I want to make sure that I have enough schools on my childs' lottery list that he'll get in somewhere. I also don't want to go overboard with "safety schools." So I want to pick the best "safety schools." This is my working list for the lottery:
1. Brent (sibling OOB) 2. Tyler Traditional 3. Ludlow Taylor 4. Minor 5. Jo Wilson 6. Payne (neighborhood school) or Wheatley Am I playing it too safe? I've heard mixed things about Tyler traditional, but its right by my older child's school and due to the Spanish Immersion program, has a really cool group of parents/ families. Ludlow is up and coming- I'm hearing good things. Minor has a good new building and a great principal and isn't hard to get into. I've heard mixed things about Wilson and its the furthest from home and my other kid's school. Payne has an old dumpy building and I've heard more bad than good- although the principal is suposed to be decent. Putting Payne on the list would guarantee us a DCPS slot, but I think having Minor and Wheatley on the list would just about guarantee that also. Thoughts? Charters are not that convenient for me locationwise other than a couple I'm not comfortable with- not bad school just don't sound like a good match for my family. Thanks. |

You have almost 11 months to work this out. It is not certain that the same schools that offer preS 3 this year will offer it next year, most likely more will offer it, but with budget cuts, who knows?
I'd suggest to pose this question in 10 months. |

I am the 14:11 poster and live in NE DC, although not near Wheatley. I also have a kid who will be eligible for 3yo lotteries next winter so I completely understand starting to think about this now--the school situation is so complicated and confusing in DC !
I'm afraid I don't know anything about these schools except Brent (which you already know about). I think it's not too early! Hope others have info. |

PP- what is your in boundary school? This is the OP. Because I have an older kid, I know a lot about the popular Hill schools- although 90% of it is from playground chatter (10% from open houses 3 years ago when older DC was applying).

| Thanks - I don't live on the Hill though. I live in Brookland in NE DC and my inboundary school is Brookland-Bunker Hill. |
| There was just an article in the post earlier this week about increasing the number of preS (3) and PreK classes for next year. I can't find the link- but maybe someone can provide it. |
