The British School of Washington will take children as soon as they turn 3 (any time in the academic year). That is for entry to their Nursery year. If they turn 4 at the end of summer (can't remember the date - check their website) they can move onto Reception (pre-K) which is the first grade of compulsory school in the UK. Otherwise they remain in the Nursery class. But they do many similar things in that class so it wouldn't be a big disadvantage.

DCPS used to have a December 31 cut-off, but they phased that out a few years back. With the exception of BSW, I don't know of any independents in the area who accept a child for PreK entry with a BD so many months after the cut-off. They don't call it "born late," they simply refer to it as the enrollment deadlines.

Keshet preschool in Crystal City is very flexible with its dates, depending on the child. Not Md. or D.C., but just across the D.C. line. The pre-k is half-day, 9:15 to 1:15.

This was me almost three years ago calling around to all these places in Montgomery County with a late November birthday daughter. Anyway, I believe Maryland State Department of Education - COMAR 13A.09.09 - basically is why every private school follows the Sept 1 deadline. You may find some schools that will do a case by case basis but most would only consider early October or by the Oct 15 date (which is the cutoff birthdate for a child to apply for early entrance kindergarten in MCPS).

The only possibility I found is Montessori schools - and among those schools there were a few that were willing to do case-by-case for up to a late December birthdate BUT the rules varied widely. Some Montessori schools only did full-day academic for their K program AND they said it was up to the teacher to decide if your child was ready .... and one added the caveat that the child was only eligible the day he/she turned 5 with teacher approval. There was another school that took my child into the more academic Jr.K where I thought she did well but when it came time for K they seemed to strictly follow the up to Oct 15 date and had my dd in another year of Jr. K ... which is part of the reason I found another Montessori that would take her for K that worked with my commute better. I could never find out if they thought my daughter wasn't ready, or if they wanted basically to get another year tuition, or if they didn't want to deal with the hassle if I tried to get my daughter into early entrance 1st grade and had to provide all the paperwork proof of a K year to MCPS. So anyway, as my daughter has done simple double digit addition, is writing, and read a 20 page story to me last night - I think the move was the right one academically. It wasn't without the bumps in the road as my daughter transitioned from more optional work to must-do kindergarten work. The real struggle will be when I try to get her in MCPS for 2nd grade or whenever. At some point they have to accept that your child can handle the work and has done X grade at a private school but they don't make it simple and past 1st grade it seems to be at the discretion of the school.

So anyway if your goal is just to challenge your child but not for early entrance into public school - there are schools with Jr. K plus for the kids that miss the cutoff. You could also go Montessori knowing that they can tailor the work for what your child can handle and can expose him/her to concepts beyond the typical age. If your goal is to do early entrance into public school - it will be a tough road ahead. Not only does the county make it difficult but the stock answer will be that they differentiate in reading and math and can handle 1-2 grade levels ahead in those areas.

Try Montessori schools in MC--I believe they have a December 31st deadline.

River school has classes for children as young as two. Might be too late for next year but it never hurts to ask.

Just out of curiousity, why do you want to move your DD into pre-K, rather than just a regular nursery or 3 year old class?

That said, you can try Winchester School in Silver Spring. They have both 3 and 4 year old classes and have been known to let 2 year olds into the 3 year old room (who then move up to the 4's while they are still 3). I'm not sure how often they make exceptions though.

OP, I am also curious why you are not considering a regular 3s preschool class for your child. Your DD's BD is 3 months past most cut-offs, not 3 days or 3 weeks. BSW, NPS, St Pat's and a few others take children younger than 4, but they are not enrolled in PreK, but the nursery class. Good luck!
