Tryouts are beginning.

I have coached for more than a decade. AMA.

If a player is leaving your team for a more challenging opportunity (like going from C to B or B to A), what can she do or say to lessen any hard feelings on the part of the coac and/or teammates if the coach and most of the team are staying at the current level?

Will tryouts next year start in May?

What’s the worst thing you’ve seen a parent do during a tryout?

Are teams that call themselves elite around here really national level? What's the deal with some organizations - are they truly nonprofit? There seems to be a lot of overselling of teams.

What are your thought on a kid going to tryouts even if she/her parents are 98% sure we don't want her doing travel yet (but think we probably will in the future)?

If a girl considers herself a pitcher (and also plays corner infield) and you don't think her pitching is strong enough but do like her for, say, 3rd base, would you take her and would you still work with her on developing her pitching of would you write off pitching for her forever? Also, would you tell her you were taking her to play 3rd only? This is for a 9 year old (2012). Or would you not want her at all because she wants to pitch and isn't there yet?

Do girls who do travel softball have time for any other ECs? It just seems to be kind of crazy to limit my young ES to one sport so early when she is interested in different things.

I’m not the OP, but my DD has time for 2 other clubs as well as some time to hang out with friends and still maintain an A average. The time commitment is big - 2 hours of practice 2-3x during the week and tournaments typically every other weekend that last all day Saturday and 3-8 hours on Sunday, depending on if they win.

No OP but have been in this position. If your daughter wants to pitch, be very clear to coaches that she wants to pitch and you are looking looking for a team where she will get to pitch. Our DD could throw hard for her age but was wild. Lots of girls between first year 10u and second year find a lot more consistency, but they have to practice and get some game experience.

Did OP come back? Are you in MoCo, OP? My impression is that all the people playing softball in MoCo know each other.

Thanks. My DD is the opposite. Does not throw hard at all but she is quite consistent. Almost always right down the center, but sometimes low.

NP with many years of travel experience. That's totally fine, although it's easier to get on teams when they are younger. There are fewer teams at the 14U level than 12, for example.

I think a coach would love that -- easier to work on speed than location.
