Giving Birth While Sick

Anonymous
I’d like to hear experiences from anyone who has delivered a baby while sick. My DS unfortunately caught a nasty bug last week with several days of fever, cough, and cold symptoms, and I am now starting to feel sick as well. My due date is rapidly approaching, so it seems highly likely that I will be having this baby while sick. Thankfully it is not Covid, but I’m wondering if having some kind of illness will cause Covid related issues in the hospital even if I test negative. Also, if you were sick when you had your baby, did your baby catch it as well? Did you take any specific precautions to try to protect your baby from the illness? how did being sick effect your labor and delivery?

DD did not catch it. The only thing that was different than my other births was I had a gush of lochia every time I coughed/sneezed.

I had a god awful cough when I had my son (pre-covid). He was a planned c-section, and the doctor just told me to hold a pillow over my stitches when I coughed. There were no precautions, and he didn’t get sick. I got better quickly after I had him. It was such a relief to breathe freely.

He probably won’t notice your cold, even a bad cold, when a baby is ripping it’s way out of your vagina

I had a bad cold during delivery and the entire first two weeks. Hi baby did not catch it. I was hacking all over the place too. Not fun with 3rd degree tearing!

I had a bad cold the entire week leading up to and including giving birth. I had been contemplating trying to do a natural birth, but I felt so lousy already that I decided it was better to just get an epidural right away. This was absolutely the right call (for me). The cold cleared up within 48 hours of giving birth, and the baby did not catch it. Be kind to yourself, and you should be fine. Good luck!

I had a terrible cold. My baby didn’t catch it. I had a c-section and the pain meds actually acted as a cough suppressant, which was helpful.

NP, but I had totally forgotten that once the baby is out of my vagina I don’t have to interact with it until I’m over the cold.

My guess is if you get sick your body will keep baby in until you’re better. It generally knows what it’s doing. Happened to me 3 years ago with my second child. Got the flu at 39 weeks and baby waited until I was stronger to come. She came later than her older sister who was born at 38 weeks.

My sister gave birth while battling severe food poisoning & e. Coli. Didn’t get 100% till weeks after birth.

She lived. Was miserable but baby was fine and she recovered.
