But of course the teachers unions are still insisting masks are necessary:

Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association, called the new CDC guidance “an important roadmap for reducing the risk of COVID-19 in schools.”

She added: “Schools should be consistently and rigorously employing all the recommended mitigation strategies, including requiring masks in all settings where there are unvaccinated individuals present, and ensuring adequate ventilation, handwashing, and cleaning.”

So still masks for all elementary students, yes?? And for 6th graders in middle school. I’m assuming most teachers will want to continue to wear masks.

Why do you think teachers want to wear masks? If they are vaccinated, why would they want to teach in masks all day? That's crazy.

So Becky Pringle literally lies about what the CDC actually said.

Np. I’m a teacher and want to continue to wear a mask. I have 3 month old twins. So maybe that makes me special but I’m assuming lots of teachers with small kids will want to wear masks at work.

Sounds good. You should be able to. But if a vaccinated teacher wants to ditch the mask that should be allowed too maybe with the caveat of low community spread. In other words : you do you but we are past controlling others when there is no real emergency.

I have a child that cannot yet be vaccinated and I'm still sort of lost in the sea of information about whether to continue masking or not. I am vaccinated and am confident that the vaccine reduces my risk of getting AND spreading covid. Plus I'm not particularly worried about the impact of covid in my 5-year-old. But....idk....I'm open to others' perspectives on how to think about this.

I don't particularly care if individual teachers decide to keep wearing masks or not. Some may be immunocompromised and got the vaccine but didn't develop immunity. I'd like them to all try to have immunity (through vaccination), though, if they are going to spend appreciable amounts of indoor time with kids that can't yet be vaccinated.

How does the booster that may be necessary for delta fit into this?

I’m vaccinated and my employer doesn’t require masks. I won’t be wearing one. I can’t imagine vaccinated teachers want to scream over a hot mask all day?!

I do not want my fully vaccinated 17 year old to have to wear a mask in a DCPS high school. CDC says that is perfectly find. Yet somehow I still expect DCPS to screw this up.

Let's start putting the pressure on Dr. LaQuandra Nesbitt, head of the DC Dept of Health. I have worked with her in the past and found her to be a very rational, measured person. Here's hoping that she will respond positively to the new CDC recommendation.

My teen is vaccinated but I still hope MCPS requires masks.

I would love to not have to wear a mask in the classroom. DCPS has already said they will be required for the fall so this would be a welcome change.

can we at least start with getting rid of outdoor masks?
