Where do you buy your furniture?

Anonymous
We're moving from a small apartment to a much larger apartment, and need to buy a lot of furniture, as most of our stuff is old and will not make the move with us. Where do you buy furniture that isn't Ikea, but also isn't Eames and Chippendale? I'm willing to spend more on items that will last a long time, but don't have an unlimited furniture fund. Thanks!

After IKEA: we bought from West Elm, Crate and Barrel, and at consignment stores
After that: Arhaus, Restoration Hardware, Design Within Reach, Room and Board and beginning to buy more craftsmen pieces

Macy's (especially for couches -- you have to dig through a lot of ugly things but they actually have terrific modern couches that are very affordably priced when you have to furnish an entire house).

Room & Board for beds, end and side tables, and shelving.

West Elm and Wayfair for living room chairs.

Article for coffee table and dining table and chairs.

Cost Plus World Market for some smaller and more decorative items. The quality is low so I would not buy anything here that will get a lot of wear and tear. But I have a cute painted writing desk and stool from here that really brightens up our bedroom.

CB2 and Crate & Barrell for everything else.

We also have a handful of thinks bought at consignment stores and flea markets, but they were acquired a long time ago when we had more time for that kind of shopping. It's so hard to do when you have young kids! But if you have a larger home to furnish, it can be good to get in the habit of swinging by an outdoor market on the weekend just to see what they have -- you never know when you might stumble across something just right. We have this ridiculous wooden chair (it's huge and heavy and very striking looking) in our entryway that was a flea market find many years ago, and it's like a family member we're so fond of it. Stuff like that makes a house feel more lived in and homey. You need it to balance out the mass produced stuff, whether its from Ikea or somewhere fancier.

If you have time (and a truck), estate sales can be great places to pick up furniture. DH uses this site a lot to look for items in advance: https://www.estatesales.net/marketplace.

Su Casa Ellicott City and Baltimore. Look them up. Price point isn't bad and they have fun items.

We have moved away from Ikea, our latest purchases have been from West Elm, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, Wayfair, and occasionally we still buy from Ikea. It really depends on what the piece of furniture is.
Ikea is great for toy storage.

Bob’s Discount Furniture! We LOVE that place. Definitely a big step up from IKEA, but it’s still pretty inexpensive. I would say the quality and the look are both excellent for the price. We’ve bought several pieces there that we’re very happy with.
